[rebel-builders] Rear drag brace failed

It is pretty straight forward to rework that drag strut. If it is broken and
you fab a new one, make sure it is the same length as the right one. Most
builders would call this a minor job and expect to spend a few hours sorting
it out. You should check for other damage if the main strut has been flexing
backward significantly. Also, identifying why the drag strut failed would be
a wise precaution. Taxiing in gusty cross winds would not normally be
expected to cause this sort of thing. At a root level, something else was
wrong and the wind maybe caused an incipient failure to occur right then. If
you understand it, you will have a lot more confidence that it won't happen
again after you have fixed it. Just start taking it apart one step at a
time. Probably wise to support the aircraft and avoid collapse forward or
aft of the main gear. If you ever had an erector set of a meccano set, you
can do this.

7-24-10, My '95 Rebel with bungee gear that I purcased flying without any
plans had a left rear drag brace fail during a hard landing, in gusty,
xwind
conds. No outward damage can be seen. The next day while I was taxing I
heard what sounded like I was dragging a tin can, I only was able to
discover
what the noise was because I saw the left tire moving to the rear as I
applied brakes and than forward with brake release. I presume the blind
rivets attaching the brace sheared. How do I repair this?? What are the
steps? Where do I get parts if required? Is this a big job with many
steps or
rather minor? My drill is ready. Tks one and all. caltrac@frontier.com
