[rebel-builders] wings

Post by Curtis Langholz » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:30 pm

Jim,

I had similar problem with some of the plastic on mine. It sat for 15 years in someones garage before I bought it

Tedious work removing it but the sooner removed the better. Acetone seems to work well to remove any residue. I just attached my wings last week. Wings are nice to build, have fun....

Just getting going on the wings on 705R. Don't know how old the plastic wrap is on them but found some of it was just about ready to fall off while some of it was a bear to peal back. Sometimes leaving an anoying sticky residue behind that even MEK wouldnt take off. Very frustrating! Found that a little heat from a hairdryer not only made the plastic easier to peel but it never left the sticky residue behind either. Just a hint for anyone else having problems with the plastic.
Wings are going together quicker than I would have thought and I am going to order the Pro Seal on Monday because we will need it soon.

When using heat, be sure the material is well supported because it will
stretch more easily when hot. How do I know? I had to remove a large area of
truly antique white plastic covering on a previously installed cockpit roof
top, using heat and a phenolic scraper. Hard to reach, and bad on the back.
There was some stretching "collateral damage" to the metal. I'm still hoping
the oil canning there will go away when the skylights go in. When hot,
lighter gauge material can stretch even from energetic tugs on the plastic.

"Goof Off" will remove the residue. It will also get masking tape and duct
tape residue off in a hurry and, as often mentioned here, residue from the
windshield covering.

Ron

"Goof Off" will remove the residue, as well glue left behind by masking
tape, etc."
