Hi Mike !

I believe FUS-10 is no longer available - it was .020. It was
replaced by FUS-70, which was .025 (and perfectly adequate), and THAT
has been replaced by FUS-(524 ??? - not sure) which is .032 - just to
standardize (it's the same part as on the Elite).

You might want to check with MAM on this if it saves you any extra work.
When I went through this, I seem to recall they were still supplying
0.020 for the top corner wraps, only the bottoms had been beefed up at
that time.

Brent Blue

FUS-10

Post by Brent Blue » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:18 pm

All:

We just finished putting in the FUS-310 (radiused) that was sent out
for the part that was left out of the quick build. For those of you
who haven't done this yet, I wanted to warn you of a few got ya's in
the process.

We were told by Darryl it was a one to two hour process. I had help
from an experienced RV builder and it took us about 20 man hours
including taking the gear off three times.

The biggest problem is the new 3/8" bolts need extra clearance. The
process goes like this.

Remove the gear. measure and center the pilot hole for the access
holes in the bottom of the fuselage. Be careful because the center
will have to be moved due to the carry through. We used a laser type
light shining through the bolt hold to located the center. This hole
will need significant enlargement for the bold and socket to fit through it.

Through the inspection hole, the 5/16" hole needs to be increased to
3/8". We were advised to use a reamer instead of a drill bit so
there would not be any chance of not keeping the hole straight. We
used reamers with extended shafts.

Trial fitting the 310 should that the rivets in the bottom of the
fuselage were in the way so we chose to file the side of the 310 but
could have filed the rivet heads.

The width of the 310 does not fit the gear legs so multiple fittings
had to be carried out to make it fit. This was done with the gear on and off.

The 310 was the installed. This is no quick feat. once positioned
from above, the 3/8 bolt was inserted but the alignment of the hole
was not exact. After some filing, etc., the bolt was carried
through. However, DO NOT push the bolt all the way up. The aft bold
needs the washer and nut placed on just as the threads come out of
the hole because there is no clearance to put the nut on after the
bolt protrudes through the hole. The front bolt nut can be put on
after the bolt is pushed through. See below.

The bolts were pushed into the hole with a thin walled socket over
the bolt head when they advanced through the inspection/access
hole. This was done simultaneously. This was done because there is
so little clearance between the larger bolt head and the carry
through that you will not be able to get the socket on the bolt
head. It has to be done simultaneously because you will not be able
to get second all the way into the hole once the first one is
in. This was due to clearance and we think because the FUS-310
didn't fit quite right and we couldn't figure out why. We pushed the
bolt up through the socket by putting a small punch through the
middle of the back of the socket so we could put the socket right
against the FUS-310 and then tap the bolt flush with the hole while
someone on the top put the nut on. Once the nut was on, we could
turn the socket. We learned all this by doing the first side but I
swear, even if we had done 10 of these, it would still have taken us 16 hours.

The bolts had to be torqued from the bolt head because there is no
clearance to torque them from the nut side. They must be torqued
with weight on the gear. We found a significant change once weight
was on the gear and re torqued them.

Let me know if you have questions. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring
my camera so I don't have pictures.

Brent
