Elevator cables and a can of worms.

I know I will probably be opening a can of worms here and I have tried
to search the archives on the topic (but I can't get the search function
to work):

I would like to run my elevator cables under the floor for about 6
feet. Has anyone done it? Has anyone had good or bad experience?

NO real reason that you couldn't Scott, if you want the extra work (and a
smooth floor to sleep on)! If I was going to do it, I would turn the control
column around so the cable attach "horns" faced forward (towards the
firewall). Then take the elevator cables off the column forward to a couple
of large (4" or so) pulleys, around the pulleys and then rearward through
the main carry through tubes and all of the bulkheads, using good quality
cable fairleads. There are some nice 2 piece ones available, with a lock
ring, that would work good and be easy to maintain. You would have to use a
nylon or similar tube for guides through the main 2" carry throughs. At the
back you would need a set of pulleys (you do anyways) to deflect the cables,
as they come out of the last bulkhead, up to the elevator mixer assembly.
You would also need access panels at every bulkhead to inspect and maintain
the system.

Just my 2 cents, for what they are worth!

Hi Scott !

If you are running the cables below to get a flat floor, there
is an easier way ! Several builders have cut a groove up the center
of a sheet of 2" blue plastic insulating foam, to leave space for
the hat over the cables, and placed the foam over the floor. This
gives a flat floor, and the insulation makes sleeping MUCH more
comfortable, as the metal doesn't suck the warmth away !

Because it's a bit higher, the foam also widens the sleeping
surface a bit.

Great idea, Bob, about the foam and elevator cables. It's stuff like that
that makes this forum so valuable. I couldn't figure out how to eliminate the
cables without hiding them under the floor (didn't like that idea as I have
this thing about being able to access every thing for inspection, or
something, go figure) and that the solution was right in front of me all this
time.

Using SM foam would give you a nice warm surface to sleep on, but prior to
using Styrofoam SM in your aircraft I would build an aluminum box, with
minimal venting, and place a hunk of foam on the inside bottom surface.
Leave the box outside (or even inside an unheated area as I find
condensation is worse in the hanger than outside in open air), elevated off
the ground, for a couple weeks and see how much moisture you find (or don't
find) between the aluminum and the SM foam. Since SM is also used as a
vapour barrier, I think you will find excessive moisture trapped under it
(from the temp changes between the aluminum and the foam) to speed up the
corrosion process. Even indoor/outdoor carpet, with the "plastic" looking
backing gets the floor turning "white" in short time. I try to use an open
loop (house) style carpet in the aircraft so it can breath and not trap
moisture under the carpets.

The foam floor is a good idea but some of that blue foam is very flammable
and gives off toxic gases even if just heated. I believe you can get
fire-retardant foam sheet. It's worth checking into.

Not as toxic as some foams, (PVC, Urethane) but is flammable.
You could cover the sheet with thin plywood or maybe non-
flammable carpeting or seat cover material. (After all, seat foam is
urethane.)
