Craig,
Just wondering what you and others are using for an airbox on the Lycomings?

Thanks Wayne, it is a 180 hp. It's Dennis Findley's old 130 hr Aerosport
0360. Regarding the spacer, I thought the machine shop charge would be more
than the shipping to swap. Walter, I am using that cowl. I didn't have the
spinner or the airbox when I started fitting it. I should have been
thinking about three areas as I worked--the airbox, the spinner, and the
attach points. Another thing I've noticed is that the carb seems to be
offset slightly to the pilot side. Approx 1/2". That will take some
re-working too. Craig

On a side-note, I met up with Jay Yau in Palmer today. He was weathered in
waiting to fly to Mccarthy. I got to study his plane in depth and I have to
say that it is very nice. He's very happy flying it up here and it was a
good shot in the arm for me. I only wish it hadn't been packed full and I
could have begged a flight! Thanks, Jay.

Craig.. figure out exactly what you need without having to play with the
cowling etc... and then take it down to the local machine shop. Pop the
locating pins out and mill or turn the forward face down to the thickness
you need for less than the postage of swapping someone.

1/2" bolts... you putting an O-360 in it?

It looks like I'm going to need a 2" spacer for my prop set-up. I have a
2.5" and somehow I ended up with a 1.5" gap between my front cowl and
spinner. Not sure what happened but I did follow the MAM cowl
instructions. Maybe they are not made for a 2.5" spacer. Anyhow, I can
make up a 1/2" at the spacer and another 3/4" where the cowl attaches at
the firewall. That will leave around a 1/4" gap. Luckily I have a good
sized lip at the back to trim.

Anyhow, the prop is a Sens 74-56 w/ 1/2 bolts. I'd like to swap with
someone rather than have to buy one. I'm guessing that they are not
cheap. Anyone have one they don't want or know of one? Thanks, Craig

[rebel-builders] Airbox

On my 320, I just used the standard airbox from the MAM fwf kit. But with my 360, I used the Vans round airbox. Worked out well and easy to adjust for carb/cowl offset. I like the large capacity easy replaceable air filter.

[rebel-builders] Airbox

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:24 pm
by walter.klatt
Can't say for sure as mine is the fibreglass cowl, but the Vans box is pretty adaptable. The front snout can be cut to varying lengths and adjusted to different heights. One thing to watch though is to have enough room on the front of the snout to install your carb heat.

The MAM style boxes do wear, though, with vibration on the carb heat shaft. The Vans one is fibreglass and seems to absorb the vibration better.

[rebel-builders] airbox

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:24 pm
by Wayne G. O'Shea
As Ralph points out.. the danger of the Vans round box is both the normal
air and the carb heat air are filtered (unlike a normal style airbox that
the carb heat is not filtererd and works as your alternate air in the event
of a clogged filter assembly).

Therefore if you fly into know ice/ heavy wet snow/ a pile of oak leaves..
or the likes.. and it smothers your filter.. you are SOL with the Van's set
up as it is sold ! I just installed a cable driven alternate air door to the
bottom of John Garstang's last week to address that very valid concern.
Wished we'd know about the magnetic one!.. but it's a done deal now.

You definitely need a bigger intake box than the standard MAM issue on the
O-360 though... As it tries to suck air thru that BA4108 filter..it will
suck enough air from the other end to rattle and wear out the carb heat
flapper shaft bushings in less than 100 hours, as the engine attempts to
draw air from where ever it can get it at WOT.

One consideration regarding the Vans airbox is that it filters carb heated
air as well as normal combustion air. The filter is a high flow K&N.
Less important on floats of course. There is a magneticlly held
"alternate air" flap that can be incorporated as well. It opens
automatically should the air intake be restricted.

Hi Jesse, how's the 'season"? Pretty slow up here. I bought a box from A

[rebel-builders] airbox

Thanks for the airbox advice everyone. Is the MAM airbox similar to the ones from ACS etc? Can the carb heat butterfly shaft be modified with bushings on that style airbox to last longer?
Craig, It's a pretty slow season so far...in the lower 48 anyway. It's been burning up your way, as I'm sure your aware of. I didn't get to go to AK this year though, hopefully I will next year. I'm in NM for a few weeks. Flown a few fires down here, and having fun landing the DC-3 on 8,000' high dirt strips...life is good!

Jesse it's not a matter of modifying the bushings to last longer.. the O-360
engine just cannot get enough air through that 4108 filter. O-320 is just
fine on the 4108 filter.

Thanks for the airbox advice everyone. Is the MAM airbox similar to the
ones from ACS etc? Can the carb heat butterfly shaft be modified with
bushings on that style airbox to last longer?
Craig, It's a pretty slow season so far...in the lower 48 anyway. It's
been burning up your way, as I'm sure your aware of. I didn't get to go to
AK this year though, hopefully I will next year. I'm in NM for a few
weeks. Flown a few fires down here, and having fun landing the DC-3 on
8,000' high dirt strips...life is good!

As Ralph points out.. the danger of the Vans round box is both the normal
air and the carb heat air are filtered (unlike a normal style airbox that
the carb heat is not filtererd and works as your alternate air in the
event
of a clogged filter assembly).

Therefore if you fly into know ice/ heavy wet snow/ a pile of oak
leaves..
or the likes.. and it smothers your filter.. you are SOL with the Van's
set
up as it is sold ! I just installed a cable driven alternate air door to
the
bottom of John Garstang's last week to address that very valid concern.
Wished we'd know about the magnetic one!.. but it's a done deal now.

You definitely need a bigger intake box than the standard MAM issue on
the
O-360 though... As it tries to suck air thru that BA4108 filter..it will
suck enough air from the other end to rattle and wear out the carb heat
flapper shaft bushings in less than 100 hours, as the engine attempts to
draw air from where ever it can get it at WOT.

One consideration regarding the Vans airbox is that it filters carb
heated
air as well as normal combustion air. The filter is a high flow K&N.
Less important on floats of course. There is a magneticlly held
"alternate air" flap that can be incorporated as well. It opens
automatically should the air intake be restricted.

[rebel-builders] airbox

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:24 pm

I just discovered a little downside with the Vans airbox. Am at the lake right now and just coming in from a little canoe trip when I noticed a bird sitting at the opening. Sure enough, a pair of swallows were busy building a nest in there.

And I was just flying yesterday. Would have been interesting next flight if I hadn't noticed that. Just finished cleaning it out. Good thing I had my Gesus wire across the front of my floats to stand on.

Good news is that this problem is easliy preventable. The carb heat door is right at the opening so I can just leave my carb heat pulled when the plane is sitting on the water.

Jesse it's not a matter of modifying the bushings to last longer.. the O-360
engine just cannot get enough air through that 4108 filter. O-320 is just
fine on the 4108 filter.
