Bruce, there may only be one Rebel that MAM "claims" to know about, but
unless Darryl shred it he has a 3 or 4 page dissertation from me in his
files describing how I sheared EVERY rivet out of my passenger door post
(and the top 5 out of the pilots side) from the top all the way down to the
wing strut attach fitting (while flying on skis in 1996). Just like opening
up a can of sardines!! I tried to get the equivalent of the "float fix
bulletin" issued back then to no avail, and it didn't actually come about
until aircraft were damaged, in front of the "world", at Oshkosh!

My fix was (and still is) to drill for and install another staggered row
(mid point between the existing rivets and forward or rearward enough to
just catch the tube without hitting the outside wall) of stainless RR5404
rivets up the door post (carry through) with the top four original holes
being enlarged to #11 for 3/16 Stainless Rivets so the guillotine action
can't get started. This has held up so far on all the Rebels I have worked
on. If the windshield is already in place you can't really do the gusset
thing. If the windshield isn't already place, I would do the gusset plate as
this puts a nice size Band-Aid right were the shearing of rivets wants to
start. (The SR2500 has a huge plate/gusset put here).

FWIW, MOST "fixes" I offer to this list aren't theoretical folks! I have
been nice enough to bust up my aircraft for you (as have others like
Allister) to develop them so your's stays together!

Wayne,

How important are the gusset plates at the top of the front and rear door
post, on MAM float fix? The new manuals only show the 2" channel between
the
engine mounts, but the SB show the channel "and" the gusset plates. Brian
G.,
at MAM, told me only one Rebel on floats ever had a problem at the door
post
and it was landing in to rough of water.

Don't see why not Keith although, if you can, I would definitely put the
gusset plate at the upper door post area to help hold it together (in
addition to the staggered rivet row) with the extra weight on the nose of a
Lyco 360 (if that is the route you are, or have, gone). MAM's "float fix"
also tells you to do a doubler plate around each of the rear wing attach
fittings as in a really hard pounding on floats, there is of course the
opportunity for the rivets to shear here also, as the floats "stop" and the
tails momentum wants it to keep going downwards, just like the engine/nose
section compared to the door post. On Howard's (and others) I have doubled
the rivet count on the two bulkheads at the rear wing attach (because he
didn't want me to pull the wings) by drilling and riveting from the inside
of the cabin, and so far so good. On Bob P's XWI, I made a large plate that
goes from the root gap fairing box to beyond the torque tube hole, with lots
of rivets to tie it all together. Probably overkill, but it will definitely
never come apart there!

I have never "viewed" an Elite construction manual (or worked on one), so
these items <MAY> be addressed in it differently than with the Rebel. (but I
doubt it!)

Glad <YOU> mentioned the factory Elite as I was avoiding the full finger
point in my plural of airplanes, even though I knew it was the other
airplane involved! I learned of the incident the day Les McInnus got home
with his Rebel (after using a turnbuckle and some other gismos to push his
motor mounts back into place so he could fly it home), as he called me to
apologize for not listening to me when I had previously offered to fly down
to Hamilton and reinforce his firewall during his engine upgrade to an
O-320. He was convinced by other Rebel builders/flyers that it wasn't
necessary and suffered damage to his aircraft in a very inconvenient place
to work on a plane (Oshkosh).

Do the reinforcing now everyone, as it's much easier before the damage as a
retrofit to a flying bird, or while you are building it the first time!

Regards,
Wayne G. O'Shea

P.S. JUST TO TEASE YOU ALL! I just came back from an hour or so of playing
in 3 feet of powder snow, with my wheel ski equipped Rebel. I had to remind
myself why I do more flying in the winter, than any other time of year!

Yah, well don't feel too bad! That hour today only brings my total time for
November and December to a "high" of 3.8 lowsy hours!!!!!!! And 1.8 hrs of
those were flights to inhibit the UTVA's engines for the winter at 0.9 each!
Really sucks when I only have to walk 90 feet and open the door to the
hanger and I still can't find the time!

Bruce, there may only be one Rebel that MAM "claims" to know about, but
unless Darryl shred it he has a 3 or 4 page dissertation from me in his
files describing how I sheared EVERY rivet out of my passenger door post
(and the top 5 out of the pilots side) from the top all the way down to
the
wing strut attach fitting (while flying on skis in 1996). Just like
opening
up a can of sardines!!

This has held up so far on all the Rebels I have
worked
on. If the windshield is already in place you can't really do the gusset
thing. If the windshield isn't already place, I would do the gusset plate
as
this puts a nice size Band-Aid right were the shearing of rivets wants to
start. (The SR2500 has a huge plate/gusset put here).

FWIW, MOST "fixes" I offer to this list aren't theoretical folks! I have
been nice enough to bust up my aircraft for you (as have others like
Allister) to develop them so your's stays together!

Wayne G. O'Shea

Trust me Brian, it REALLY broke my heart the day I turned my Rebel into an
opened sardine can! Luckily I did it in front of my father-in-laws
waterfront home and he had a full 60 of rum on hand! The next day I figured
how to patch it together for the 1/2 mile flight home to the field, for
proper inspection and repairs. Amazing what you can do in a pinch, with a
hand full of rivets and a roll of duct tape!

Take care,

Hi Wayne

That is mighty big of you to break & bust your aircraft so that others can
benefit from your grief!

I wish I was as noble as you but I'm too lazy. And it would break my
heart.
Obviously, the weaknesses that you and others have pointed out really help
us all make
the Rebel a better aircraft. It is great that we have this site to keep
the
info flowing.

Best Regards

Wayne,

How important are the gusset plates at the top of the front and rear
door
post, on MAM float fix? The new manuals only show the 2" channel between
the
engine mounts, but the SB show the channel "and" the gusset plates.
Brian
G.,
at MAM, told me only one Rebel on floats ever had a problem at the door
post
and it was landing in to rough of water.
