It also (almost) says to do so in the old manual between step 195 and 196..
if you read closely!

Thanks Ken,
I like your idea, and will drill both fus 5 to accept a socket. Makes
sense
if you want to install floats, otherwise the nut would not be accessible.
I would like to take some more pics of your plane... it helps out greatly
when building. Where do you fly out of?
Thanks all for the help.

What if you ever need to replace the LG26, or perhaps remove them after
installing floats? Landing gear incidents do occasionally happen. If it
is OK to cut the carry throughs in half, it is OK to cut bolt/socket
holes in the piece that I did not cut off and throw away IMO. I like to
look ahead and make maintenance and repairs as easy as possible.

I just built my cage a couple of months ago. I cut mine in half, but
for the full tubes you drill a hole only in the back side of the rear
fus 5 to fit a socket over the head of the 5/16" bolt. The manual
says to make room for the socket but they left out the step to tell
you the size of the hole for the socket. The front is left undrilled
and you are supposed to fit a wrench down the end of the tube to hold
the nut in place. The AN-5-20 bolt will fit between both fus -5's to
support the gear leg. At the end of the fus - 5's the 3 bolts are
only AN 3-20's.

Roland That is consistent with my memory and a quick scan of the
manual. Think I drilled about 5/8" holes to fit sockets inside both
Fus5 channels. The -20 bolt would be the same bolt whether or not
someone cut the Fus5's in half and it installs exactly the same way
once you cut access holes for a socket. Ken
