[rebel-builders] Fus 5 Holes for LG 26

It also (almost) says to do so in the old manual between step 195 and 196..
if you read closely!

Thanks Ken,

I like your idea, and will drill both fus 5 to accept a socket. Makes
sense
if you want to install floats, otherwise the nut would not be accessible.

I would like to take some more pics of your plane... it helps out greatly
when building. Where do you fly out of?

Thanks all for the help.

What if you ever need to replace the LG26, or perhaps remove them after
installing floats? Landing gear incidents do occasionally happen. If it
is OK to cut the carry throughs in half, it is OK to cut bolt/socket
holes in the piece that I did not cut off and throw away IMO. I like to
look ahead and make maintenance and repairs as easy as possible.

Roland That is consistent with my memory and a quick scan of the
manual. Think I drilled about 5/8" holes to fit sockets inside both
Fus5 channels. The -20 bolt would be the same bolt whether or not
someone cut the Fus5's in half and it installs exactly the same way
once you cut access holes for a socket. Ken

The instructions say not to drill any holes in the front Fus 5, so I have
drilled the back Fus 5 to 5/16. Looking ahead in the plans, it shows a
AN5-20 bolting the LG 26s to the Fus 5, but is not clear which Fus 5 they
are bolted to, front or back. As the bolt is only a 20, it will only go
through one Fus 5. By the way I left my Fus 5s full and did not cut in half.

Logic tells me that the bolt should go through both Fus 5s as well as the LG
26. So I guess I must drill a hole big enough to get the bolt and a socket
into, same as with the holes at the end of the Fus 5.

Just looking for some guidance... as replacement parts are hard to come by.

Roland,

I just built my cage a couple of months ago. I cut mine in half, but for the full tubes you drill a hole only in the back side of the rear fus 5 to fit a socket over the head of the 5/16" bolt. The manual says to make room for the socket but they left out the step to tell you the size of the hole for the socket. The front is left undrilled and you are supposed to fit a wrench down the end of the tube to hold the nut in place. The AN-5-20 bolt will fit between both fus -5's to support the gear leg. [rebel-builders] Fus 5 Holes for LG 26

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm

I cut my FUS 5's in half and installed fixed nut plates on the back one to
make switching to floats easier. Even without cutting the FUS5 I'd make a
large enough hole to rivet a nut plate.

[rebel-builders] Fus 5 Holes for LG 26

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm

Hi Drew

I could not help but notice that coming through the floor and routing
the amphib hydraulic lines would have been a bit easier if I'd cut 1/2
or a 1/4 off the forward carrythroughs. Thanks for recommending the DOT
air brake tubing as it is more flexible than the stuff from MAM and that
helped.

OTOH (warning heresy alert) I'd seriously consider the "spring" gear if
building again. Seems to me that the current mounting re-inforcement
together with Alister's beams back to the rear gear attach fittings
might make for a tough and low maintenance landing gear. I suppose it
would loose the classic "Rebel" look though...

[rebel-builders] Fus 5 Holes for LG 26

Post by schaumr » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm

If you don't want to install standard nutplates, I went with two AN5 clickbond
nutplates on the inside of the aft fus 5 (uncut) so I could remove/maintain
the bolts from the footwell side without undoing the floor.

Also, just make doubly sure the AN5-20 bolts are still the right ones for the
job when you're finally ready to install...I think I may have had to to go to
AN5-21.
