[rebel-builders] Engine mount, now exhaust

The only time you want more power on a Rebel (or Elite) is if you are on amphibs. And the best solution is a 360, IMO.

The 360 costs only 200 more than a 320, only 8 pounds more (with equiv acc) and burns less fuel if you add EI.

I've talked lots before on this list about my 360 upgrade, and going on 2 years with it now. And I couldn't be happier with that decision. That extra bit of power made a huge improvement in performance all around.

Now if Gary could get me a cheap Powerflow to try, I might be interested in that, too... (grin)

My guess, though would be less perf improvement on mine because I already have a straight through cross over exhaust with 2 inch tail pipes vs an inefficient Cessna muffler system.

I would save the cost of the C/S and spend it on a Powerflow exhaust. Unlike
most exhausts that claim to be "tuned" the Powerflow actually has the
correct lengths and diameters. My pal put one on his 160 hp C-172 on floats
to improve his takeoffs and found that he was able to have the prop
repitched a bit steeper. He still got the shorter takeoffs and was able to
cruise at a lower throttle setting.

With the power of a decent o-320 I'd rather save the weight on the nose
than take a second off the takeoff performance. THe Rebel is not the
high speed cruiser that can gain a huge amount from a C/S prop.

[rebel-builders] Engine mount, now exhaust

There are a number of good sources for tuned and cross-over exhausts with a
range of prices.

Powerflow was expensive when I was shopping; even their experimental
version. I think I got my crossover from Aircraft Exhaust, but checking the
Vans website will bring up others as well.

I talked to the Powerflow folks at a trade show a few years ago. Powerflow
performance on the 172 and Cardinal is great because Cessna provides such a
lousy exhaust. The great performance of Powerflow is relative to the
inefficient Cessna design, not other tuned exhausts. The Powerflow person
specifically told me that for my homebuilt application Powerflow is as good
as other tuned exhausts.

I liked Powerflow's honesty. I went with a less expensive crossover.

[rebel-builders] Engine mount, now exhaust

No yet. I'm having two much fun on wheels, plus my wife is about to solo it
on wheels too.

Heading up right now into the mountains to land on a gravel strip in the
Cascades. Hope the snow has melted...

Be back on floats before Arlington and Nympo Lake.
