Hi guys,

I'll be heading to Alaska in two weeks (from southern California), what's
the VFR chart you guys use in Canada? The VFR approach precedure is it the
same as in the U.S.? Any input will be highly appreciated.

Hi Mike,

My next airport after Talkeena will be a private strip at the southeast corner of Denali National park, less than a mile from Princess Lodge, I should be getting fuel at Fairbank.

We have lots of charts, it's a big country :) you can get them at some
airports, pilot shops or from the source

http://www.navcanada.ca/NavCanada.asp?L ... efinitionF
iles\Publications\AeronauticalInfoProducts\Charts\VNC\default.xml

It looks like you'll need at least 3 charts for your trip. Check this page.

http://www.navcanada.ca/ContentDefiniti ... uticalInfo
Products/Charts/VNC/VisualNAVIndex.pdf

You'll also need to get a copy of the A.I.P. ( aeronatical information
publication ) for airport information and procedures.

Have you seen the cross border flying .pdf at AOPA or the COPA site? It
explains everything rather well. Our "authorities" in Canada strongly
encourage entering the circuit or pattern straight in on downwind (no
45* turns or entering on base) or
crossing over the field at circuit altitude and entering the downwind
from mid field but expect anything including guys with no radio. Guys
(and gals) will also cross the airport at above circuit altitude and
then do a diving 180 turn to recross the field and enter the downwind.
Believe it or not that is also encouraged. I prefer the American system.

The canada flight supp is equivalent to the facility books.
I use these guys for VNCs (Visual Nav Charts) and the flight supp.
http://www.vippilot.com/
The AIP book is general rules and regs. Unless you want to get a
Canadian pilot licence, the online AOPA guide is free and more useful
than the AIP thing IMO. It's a large .pdf but easy to find what is relevant.

I think Drew was pointing Jay to the CFS (Canada Flight Supplement).
Jay the CFS is the "bible" of airport information with a listing for
every registered aerodrome in the country. Each listing has the
important info for that aerodrome, check this page:
http://www.navcanada.ca/navcanada.asp?c ... efault.xml

This is a sample page:
http://www.navcanada.ca/ContentDefiniti ... FS/CFS.pdf

You can download a listing of airport diagrams here:
http://www.navcanada.ca/NavCanada.asp?L ... efault.xml

I'll vote for VIP Pilot Centre too for sectionals & the CFS, they are
good & FAST!

Cheers,

Dave

Yep... I'll third or fourth VIP.. I needed a Thunder Bay chart and didn't
remember that I'd given my old one to Walter... when he left for home from
my place in 2006 (I think that's where it went anyhow!). Two days before my
trip to Nipigon, in 2008, I went to mark the route on the map and it wasn't
in my bag. VIP had it out and to a local businesses address for me the next
day.

Ah yes, I still have that one,... from November, 1989...<g>. And did you
ever make use of that Toronto VTA (or was it a VNC, can't remember) I left
you?

Next time you make to Vancouver again, Wayne, I have a special souvenir
Olympic Vancouver VTA for you. This one really is unique, in that it has
1:250,000 resolution north of Vancouver which is normally available only as
a 1:500,000 VNC map.

I think Drew was pointing Jay to the CFS (Canada Flight Supplement).
Jay the CFS is the "bible" of airport information with a listing for
every registered aerodrome in the country. Each listing has the
important info for that aerodrome, check this page:
http://www.navcanada.ca/navcanada.asp?c ... les/public
ations/aeronauticalinfoproducts/publications/cfs/default.xml
oProducts/Publications/CFS/CFS.pdf
You can download a listing of airport diagrams here:
http://www.navcanada.ca/NavCanada.asp?L ... Definition
Files\Publications\AeronauticalInfoProducts\CanadianAirportCharts\default.xm
l
I'll vote for VIP Pilot Centre too for sectionals & the CFS, they are
good & FAST!

Cheers,

Dave

The AIP book is general rules and regs. Unless you want to get a
Canadian pilot licence, the online AOPA guide is free and more useful
than the AIP thing IMO. It's a large .pdf but easy to find what is
relevant.

We have lots of charts, it's a big country :) you can get them at some
airports, pilot shops or from the source

iles\Publications\AeronauticalInfoProducts\Charts\VNC\default.xml

It looks like you'll need at least 3 charts for your trip. Check this
page.
http://www.navcanada.ca/ContentDefiniti ... uticalInfo
Products/Charts/VNC/VisualNAVIndex.pdf

You'll also need to get a copy of the A.I.P. ( aeronatical information
publication ) for airport information and procedures.

[rebel-builders] Flying to Alaska

Your request has many levels of answers, which others have chimed in.

But, the short list is you need: a passport, bring a gun (no handguns) and
you need to apply to Canada and pay a fee, get familiar with eAPIS which is
required by the US to ask permission to leave the US as well as reenter your
country, you need to file a VFR or IFR flight plan across the lower-48
border, you need to squawk a unique border crossing code assigned by ATC or
FSS, you need to use airports of entry in both Canada and the US for all of
your crossings. Going into Canada is easy. But in the US, you will be
escorted from your plane in your own country for your full paperwork
inspection plus Geiger counter radiation inspection of your plane. If you
don't hit your arrival times into your US airport of entry, you are subject
to many thousands of dollars of fines. I don't recall if we still need
special paperwork to bring an experimental airplane across borders, AOPA and
EAA have the answers. Your old ELT may be okay in Canada now, but won't be
in the near future. Oh, and flying rules in Canada are similar, but
different enough to be really important to know before heading north (AOPA
is a good source).

I'm sure I've missed a few important items. Crossing the border is actually
really easy, but you need to do everything above.

Hi guys,

I'll be heading to Alaska in two weeks (from southern California), what's
the VFR chart you guys use in Canada? The VFR approach precedure is it the
same as in the U.S.? Any input will be highly appreciated.

Jay

[rebel-builders] Flying to Alaska

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm
by Jay Yau
Thank you all for so many valuable feedback.

My indented route is, crossing the border via Bellingham/Abbortsford, make one stop at Chilliwack for lunch, then Fraser River Canyon, Williams Lake, Prince George, Mackenzie, Yukon Trench, Watson Lake, Whitehorse......then Alaska.

Last year I took the same route, went all the way to Whitehorse then return, it was in early Oct when I decided to return, the Wx was too cold to proceed. I had VNC and Canada Flight Supplement with me, a pilot who I met at Abbortsford told me, he uses different chart, that's the reason I brought up the question. And thank you Ken, the circuit you described confirmed with what I had heard at the local airport here, just wanna be sure from you guys.

I am taking a full size Folding bike with me (w 26" mountain bike tires), it fits well in Rebel.

Comes to think of it, what's the rule to have expired Charts in the airplane and two 5 gallon fuel bottle when flying through Canada? Is air pistol consider a hand gun in Canada? This substitutes the 22 caliber I would like to have.

Jay
