Anyone out there remember the aluminum composition number of the leg
gears from the 2000 or #637 era? I have seen it here on the list but have
been unable to find it. 7171 comes to mind but am not sure. Thanks

Steve W.

[rebel-builders] Spring Gear Composition

Hi Wayne.
I'll give u the story so others can assure themselves about the spring gear
and the strength the fuse has if it is beefed up properly. Sold the plane and
delivered it just before I came out to BC for work. Shipped the floats. Had a
rushed trip and met the new owners in Montreal. One newbie to aviation and
the other 1000+ hrs. I checked out the higher time guy. The newbie did 15
hrs with an instructer and about 8 hrs solo on a very, very unimproved grass
strip before a hard landing. The only description of the damage is that both
legs are bent and the left wheel is out 2" in some direction. No damage to the
fuse. I didn't have any crush tubes or spacers in the square tubes but have
2" 3/16" 2024T3 angle under the heads of the front bolts as per the bulletin.
The bolts didn't break. Hard to believe the gear moved before the fuse. They
were looking for the material number to have them straightened. They
contacted Bob but haven't heard anything as of yet. I'll send them your email
address, Wayne and if they want to go that way, they'll get a hold of you.
The guy's name is Richard. Take care.......

Hi Steve !

First time I've heard of spring gear legs bending !
Amazing that you didn't even have crush tubes - others
who didn't were not so lucky...

It definitely would NOT be safe to just bend them back -
that would certainly weaken the metal !!

Just to keep the record straight, I have NOT had ANY email
from anyone regarding this situation .... so don't blame me
for not answering. (I just searched all my email history ...)

They can certainly order new spring gear legs directly
from the factory. Jeff will be happy to help them !

Hi Bob
I'm not blaming anyone but relaying what was sent to me. I believe he called.
He refers to Murphy by your name so may have called BC enquiring what the
gears were made of.

This may be obvious but just in case...... Presuming the gear is 7075
as mentioned, it is probably "artificially aged" (hardened) to something
like T6 after working (bending to shape) so the straightening process
should include:

* Dye penetrant inspection for cracks. If your contact is near
Montreal then there should be no problem finding someone in the
aerospace industry in the area to do an inspection IAW an
appropriate process. Perhaps the process which is called out in
the MacCauley C-152 prop SB.
* Anneal
* Straighten
* Re-heat treat.

I've used Metcor in the Montreal area for heat treatment of welded 6061
frames and had good service. For what we did I thought the price was
quite reasonable.

The parts are annealed as the first step in the aging process so that's
the perfect opportunity for straightening the parts. They also have a
location in Ft. Erie in Ontario. http://www.metcor.biz/

Cheers,

Dave

I, like Bob, have serious doubts that the gear legs are bent and the fus is
fine Steve!

Possible that he bent an axle, as I have seen that, but the gear leg before
the FUS-5 crushes/rips.. NEVER.

If I'm wrong (and I think I have been a few times).... like I said.. I have
a set of legs under the bench.

I sent Richard your email address and that you have a set of legs so it's up to
him. He has an AME that works on his planes. Other than what was sent to
me, I have no other knowledge of what has actually moved. He says that
there is no damage to the saddles or the fuse. Thats all I know. He hasn't
returned any messages to the stuff I have been sending him so he may be
away.
