Congratulations Ron. Looks and sounds fantastic. I hope that you are able to
fly 254R to Arlington this year so I can check it out and take pictures.

Friday marked the first engine start for 254R. After cranking with mags off

to produce positive oil pressure, the initial start went smoothly. Initial

mixture setting on the AeroCarb was a little rich, but manageable. Between

the two runs, mixture needle was leaned just a quarter turn and seems to be

fine now, at least at low RPM's. All sensors and accessories appear to be

working well, except the dual alternators and tach. The tach reads pulses

from the primary alternator so those issues may well be related. A handheld

optical tach was very useful. With suboptimal cooling because the cowl was

off -- fire extinguishers at the ready -- I didn't run it too long, but wow,

what a thrill.

The Jabiru 3300 6-cyl. is a very smooth and (everyone agreed) very quiet

engine. The airplane is alive, and so is the builder.

Keep us all posted, Ron. I will be particularly interested in how well
the 6 cyl. Jab manages to move the Rebel airframe, given the limited
Prop diameter the maximum rpm allows.
Not an academic interest either, since I have the same airframe and have
yet to select an engine for it.

Nice sounding engine. I too will be interested in your performance
data as I have been fascinated with the Jabiru 3300 for quite awhile.
I think that you will keep that smile on your face for some time now.

Post by Ron Shannon » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:22 pm

Of all the nice comments, that's got to be the best one to hear, Randy.

I've had to learn quite a bit more about falling off the horse and getting
back in the saddle -- dozens of times. I'm not there yet, but I know there
is an end -- at least a time to fly -- and it's coming. There have to be
more efficient ways to learn aeroplane crafting skills, but there may be no
better way to learn what it takes to do something this challenging.

Thanks to all. Onward.

I will be watching your progress keenly too, Ron as the 3300 Jab is a
possible powerplant for my Rebel, although now that Rodney O'Geary's
Rotec powered ship is here in Tasmania, that too has appeal.

Sorry if I have missed any information you may have posted previously
but can you give us the benefit of your thinking in going for the
AeroCarb over the Jab's normal Bings?

Tim Hickey

[rebel-builders] 254R - first engine start

Post by Tim Hickey » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm

Congratulations, Ron.
This reminds me of the first start of my Zenith CH-300, Lycoming O-320, 22
years ago.
It seems that there are two Allen head pipe plugs on the front of the engine
that plug what I would guess is a machining access hole for the oil galley
for the valve lifters. I overhauled that engine myself, and, shamefully,
forgot to reinstall those two plugs. When you pull the sparkplugs and crank
the engine to build oil pressure, you can shoot oil about 10 feet out in
front of the plane. Pretty neat, but messy.

Glad you did not have that problem.

Tim Hickey.

Bill, I held forth in quite a detailed & lengthy discussion on the AeroCarb
vs. Bing here awhile back, so I don't want to drag the whole group through
that again, but will be happy to track down some of it and send to you
direct. If I don't get to it right away, a search in the message archives
for "AeroCarb" (no quotes) will certainly bring it up.

Ron

PS - Doing it again, I'd probably get the new Rotec TBI-40 instead of the
AeroCarb -- and may yet go that route somewhere down the road. As you may
know, it's also a throttle body, but IMHO more advanced, without adding
complexity. Same arguments vs. the Bing apply, only more so. :)

Thanks Ron. I'll go look for it.

Dont quite know how I missed the discussion up to this point but it was
possibly because, until recent times, I have never really been a fan of
the Jabiru engine. I saw too many failures in the early days here
Downunder but they seem to have overcome that in more recent times.
There certainly is now a huge fleet of them all over the globe and I
have had recent experience with the smaller 2200 engine in a Jodel D18
that has caused me to warm to them.

Yes, I have been watching the Rotec TBI-40 as well.

cheers
