You do not need 12" letters to cross into Canada. You do need proof of
liability insurance. You cannot cross the border with temporary
registration.

Google the Transport Canada website for details.

I just gotta reply to "mature" built aircraft. I can categorically state
that my aircraft was "immature" built. At least that's what my wife tells
me.

With regard to entering Canada, Ted answered your rego number question. 3
inch is fine. Here is a website about "CANPASS" which will give you more
info about Candian Customs.
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/prog/canpass ... r-eng.html. Entering
Canada is the easy part. Re-entering the US is the hard part. Here is a
website where you can take care of your customs decal requirement.
https://dtops.cbp.dhs.gov/. Here is a website where you can take care of
your Electronic Advance Passenger Information System (eAPIS) requirement for
re-entering the US. https://eapis.cbp.dhs.gov/help.html. This satisfies a
new requirement to supply a passenger list and manifest to the US Customs in
advance of entry to the US. Get lots of phone numbers for Customs offices
anywhere near where you plan to re-enter the US. The last time I re-entered
I had a hard time getting a hold of someone at my port of entry.

Also visiting in a homebuilt:

There is a downloadable document you need to visit in a homebuilt.
