Rebel / Elite - Dipstick clearance on Dynafocal mounts

Someone asked if it was a common issue that his dipstick tube was hitting
the mount a while back....

.. .. so while bolting up the latest (O-320-E2D) engine installation today,
I took a picture after everything was tightened up.

This has been the typical clearance on every Dynafocal engine I've mounted
to a Murphy made mount. About 3/16 to 1/4"....so not sure why the fella
had/has issues.

Rebel / Elite - Dipstick clearance on Dynafocal mounts

My O-320 D2A engine oil filler tube was touching the engine mount, It bothers me during the engine start every time. The tube has worn out about 1.5mm after 200 hours of flying (tach time), still got 3mm remain (the wall thickness of the tube is 4.5mm).

Since it's ABS plastic, I heated up with a heat gun and bent the tube a little to have about 4mm of clearance from the Engine mount (advise from Mattituck), but since I didn't use the correct shroud to even up the temperature, it actually damaged the tube surface a little. The tube eventurly sit back a little and now has about 2 mm of clearance.

Since my Rebel was ground looped by the builder 5 years ago (36 hours since new), I thought the tube issue might have something to do with it, but may be I was wrong until I see your problem.

I did the dynamic check on the prop soon after I bought it, the vibration was almost nil.

I got a new tube in a box today, from Mattituck. I will go through the same heating process to bent the tube, this time I'll do it right.

I do have something to contribute to all of you, about the Aileron gust lock, I thought about different ways to make them, and even thought about to purchase from Aircraft Spruce ($39), until a couple days ago, I came up with the idea of using two pieces of garden hose (about 5" long) and use safety wire (gauge .040) to loop around the hose and hold them in place, it has worked so beautifully. It's simply, easy, and very effective, the best design I ever have.

My mount was wrong and Murphy replaced it - but that's about 5 years ago.
