[rebel-builders] Battery in the Rear

One cable run to battery box and solenoid in tail-cone. Fibreglass GA types battery box and secure hold down. Using a Deka Powersports Absorbed Glass Mat Technology ETX18L 300cca motorcycle type battery. Same battery starting the 0-320 for 5 or 6 years now.

Might be able to get a pic of the install later today.......Angus

I'm looking at putting my battery in the T cone due to the 0360 up front. I found one photo in the archives of this. Does anyone have any helpful advice or photos they can share? Thanks. Craig

[rebel-builders] Battery in the Rear

My Odyssey PC625 is still going strong after 10 years. Just 13.2 pounds, and
have mine mounted on the firewall forward. Even ran it dead a couple years
ago, when I left the master on, but a 15 minute Honda generator charge was
all it took to start my engine again, and has been good ever since.

A lot of people go for the 680, don't know why, as I think the PC625 is the
better battery...
http://www.odysseyfactory.com/battspecs.html

But wouldn't hurt to mount it back as far as you can to help with CG.
Doesn't matter on floats, but probably helps with wheels. Although with VGs
on the underside of the tail, probably not needed on wheels either.

I'm thinking I might reserve a place on the F wall for when I'm on floats
but install it now in the tail. Unfortuneately I didn't plan to route
cables back there when building the tailcone. Now I'll have the weight of
cables and they'll be in the way as well. But...I'll also have 180 hp

I think what Walter typed my have mislead you. If you install it in the back
to start with... you will not be moving it forward once you go to floats.

MAM 1800 amphib's c of g is around 10.7 inches after of aircraft datum ( the
front door post/leading edge of wing)

If you have cut your firewall back 3" from kit received condition you'll be
good with the battery at least behind the tailcone curtain. If you haven't
cut the firewall back you'll be wanting it further down the cone...

[rebel-builders] Battery in the Rear

by Walter Klatt
Yeah, once you put it in the back, leave it there. If I was building now
that's probably what I would do. And yes, my firewall is cut back 3 inches.

Just saying it does also work on the firewall like I have with mine. On
wheels, I had a bit of trouble getting my tail down for 3 pointers when
lightly loaded. But if you have VGs on the underside of the stabs, might not
have that problem. Because landing on floats is not with as high an angle of
attack, not a problem with a forward c of g.

The advantage of the battery on the front, is a simpler and lighter
installation. And you have more aft c of g available for baggage. Of course
you will want a light battery up there.

I also have 20 pounds of survival gear/tools stuffed in the tail cone on
mine, so that really helps with c of g, too.

BTW, my empty c of g (with all onboard equip, incl survival gear) is 10.7,
both wheels and floats, and didn't change when I went to the 360.

So, your choice, Craig...

Wayne,
Perfect timing for this conversation on my end. I'm not a light firewall

Thanks

As I remember.. built with firewall in original position. I'd suggest
planning, wire wise, for a battery box in the D bulkhead area.... a bit in
front.. or a bit behind D bulk.... where ever you can fit it nicely to the
passenger side of the floor. ELT beside it on the pilots side. Gives you
plenty of floor that way if you need to sleep back there some rainy night on
a back lake!

Subject: [rebel-builders] Battery in the Rear

I'm looking at putting my battery in the T cone due to the 0360 up
front.
I
found one photo in the archives of this. Does anyone have any helpful
advice or photos they can share? Thanks. Craig

"Engine will be delivered in 2 weeks, panel stuff on bench waiting
install,
fly by this Fall!
