[rebel-builders] Tailwheel Study

That's a great look, Eric. A new perspective for sure. The little rubber
doughnit looks huge in that video! BTW, if that's what it looks like during
winter where you are, why even bother removing the floats? :)

Over the years there have been discussions about the pros and cons of the
Murphy tailwheel vs other offerings like Scott and Matco. I've been curious
what is going back there with my Murphy tailwheel.

So, I pointed my cheap Flip video camera backwards to watch it during the
torture test of grass, pavement, high speed taxi, takeoff and landing.
There is never a wiggle or a waggle and definitely never a shimmey. Check
out the YouTube video for proof and some chuckles.

I was not flying for this video. My friend was doing all the flying. He has
never flown a Murphy before, but is an excellent pilot as you can see in
the video. After watching the video, I've decided not to let him ever fly
the plane again. In fact, I hate him.

Enjoyed your video. Have to admit I now have a higher opinion of the Murphy
tail wheel then before. Hard to judge size in the video, do you know if the
Elite use the same tail wheel and tail spring as the Rebel?

Thanks for the help.

Great video ! I am have the Murphy tailwheel on my bird, but I have a new
Matco wheel to try, but the Murphy wheel has two mounting bolts and the
matco only has one. Has any one tried drilling the spring ? or would it be
easyer to change the spring ( and the mounting block since most of the
springs are not as wide )

Thanks

Nice work, I wish I could find as good of a solution for the SR3500...

We should hook up sometime, Im just over the channel at Paine. I knew right
away that this was Whidbey Airpark; and I've seen the rebel there before on
amphibs...I come in there in the John Deere SuperCub often.

Look me up, would love to BS for a minute.

Sorry Charlie, no joy on that one.

The Elite changes the fork as well when upgrading to the larger tailwheel.
I remember there being one Rebel that had a "special" fork made by MAM in
order to accept a larger tailwheel, but that part wasn't put into
production; of coarse things could change if there was multiple requests for
the larger Rebel "fork" giving an option for larger tailwheel.

Cheers,
Jeff

Jeff,

Perhaps you've told us this before, but what's the tailwheel setup

[rebel-builders] Tailwheel Study

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:03 pm

Rob,

Rebel was built MAM Stock, made no modifications to the aluminum leaf style
spring and the fork/wheel combination is MAM Stock as well.

Noting, you can trim down the MAM Stock spring (or slab of aluminum as some
call it) to give some flex and lose some weight too.

Cheers,
Jeff

Charlie,

The Rebel uses the same tail wheel as the Elite, but the Elite
does have
the
option to upgrade the wheel to a larger size. The tail spring is
different
between the two a/c, Rebel uses a leaf type spring and the Elite
uses a
stinger (tube) type spring.

Jeff

[rebel-builders] Tailwheel Study

Jeff,
Thanks much for the info. Bob Patterson provided some trim-down
dimentions in his post dated Jan 22 2008:

"...you might want to mill or grind it to taper from full thickness at the top
mounting, to about 1/2 thickness at the tailwheel, to give a bit more flex."

Does this sound about right to you? I assume the taper would have to end
before the tailwheel contact area so there is uniform thickness near the bolt
hole?

Has anyone on this list actually had experience with this set-up (positive or
negative)? It would be great to hear a first-hand account.

Cheers,
Rob

Rob,

I do recall a couple of a/c's trimming down the aluminum spring and without
looking (finding) my notes I don't know the measurements. I do know, if you
trim too thin, you may acquire some stress cracks.

Cheers,
Jeff

[rebel-builders] Tailwheel Study

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:03 pm
by Ian Donaldson
G'day

I had the standard MAM wheel on my Rebel and it gave lots of trouble, despite my
regular maintenance on it. It broke the puny roll pin in the mechanism when I
was landing and of course I got a spectacular ground loop.

I threw the wheel and the spring into the trash can and replaced the MAM
"spring" with just a single leaf car type spring, and the MAM wheel with a
Scott.

The difference in ground handling was immediately noticeable and I recommend
this as a good modification.

Regards

Ian
Has anyone on this list actually had experience with this set-up (positive
or negative)? It would be great to hear a first-hand account.
