[rebel-builders] question about flaps and trim

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:02 pm
by Bob Palmer
Scott,

The first thing that you should do before considering building an
aircraft is to experience flying one. Many flight schools offer
introductory flights at a very low cost. Bring your questions to one of
those and the instructor will explain with a demonstration the elevator
and flaps. It will be fun and rewarding.

Regards,
Bob.

Hello there,

I am looking at buying a used rebel but I am looking at reworking the dash
with the Dynon skyview and adding a few more electrical items. One of the
things I want to add is a Automatic Flap Positioning system that also
controls elevator and trim. I have a few questions about the elevator and
flaps:

1. What would the flaps full upposition be used for? Is that used when
say taking off the runway to grab altitude?

2. What do the different positions of the flaps do? I understand it's
for cruising but what exactly happens to the craft when you use the
different flap settings?

3. What is the elevator's purpose?

4. I will be flying over land with this aircraft no water floats. Is
this flap positioning and elevator trim system actually necessary?

Thanks for the answers this will be an an educational learning experience
for me.

[rebel-builders] question about flaps and trim

Bob,

I have done that already. Here is the thing that I haven't told anyone here
yet but I am totally blind and it's always been a dream to fly. What I am
trying to do is actually try to learn if this is really worth putting in the
aircraft or not and what it does because of my loss of sight I can't see
what the flaps and trim do however there is no reason why I can't build the
aircraft and honestly I don't how crazy you guys think I am.

[rebel-builders] question about flaps and trim

Scott,

Building an airplane from a kit is challenging for anyone. I admire you
for wanting to try it. This is an excellent forum more leaning about
building issues but perhaps not so much about theory of flight.
I will contact you off line and if there are any other volunteers
perhaps with flight instruction experience?

Bob.

[rebel-builders] question about flaps and trim

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:02 pm
by Ron Shannon
Scott,

I do recall you have written to the list before about your dreams of flying,
which we all share. I don't think anybody thinks you're crazier than all the
rest of us. :-) I do know that some sightless people have learned to fly and
surmounted incredible challenges to do so. I'm sure most if not everybody on
this list admires the incredible things that many blind people, including
you, no doubt, are able to do.

However, some of your questions are very basic to flying and Bob quite
reasonably suggested that the importance and proper use of these controls is
something you really should learn about through proper flight instruction.
It is not possible to adequately learn about these things on an Internet
mailing list. Any other pilot would agree, regardless of your physical
capabilities.

I am going to write to you direct -- off list -- and will try to give you
some preliminary answers to your other questions, including options for
programmable electric controls. In the meantime, you should consider both
elevator trim and flaps (or flaperons) to be essential to proper operation
of a Rebel.

Regards,
Ron

Ron,
I for one, thank you for a quite elogant way of answering the gentlemans question. I am not the best with words and you summed it up very well.

Bob,

I am sorry that I came off so strong but I have had ppople tell me that I am
not able to do0 things like this. That is the reason I get my feathers
worked up. I have been in the process of deciding how to build an aircraft
where I may some day be able to fly it for the last 10 years. But as you
know things change all the time. The aircraft I am looking at is pretty
much built I just want to change the dash, needs new tires, needs the
windows changed, needs one door possibly repainted and also needs one of the
wings repainted other than that it sounds airworthy.

[rebel-builders] question about flaps and trim

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:03 pm
by Bob Palmer
Scott,
As they say, "if it ain't broke don't fix it". Aircraft usually do the
intended job very well without changing anything. If you want to build
one I am sure you could do that. If you want to fly one I would be very
interested in how.
Respectfully,
Bob.
