[rebel-builders] Elevator Install

Something I pointed out to Brian Godden about 2001... the elevator has to
come apart and you have to redo the V ribs.. after cutting the skin back
about 1/2 an inch on each side of the V.

Hi All,

First of all I would like to thank all of you for all the help and Ideas.
I've gotten a lot of great responses and haven't conveyed my sincere
thanks yet so here it is.

I'm trying to install my horizontal stabilizer and elevator. Problem is
the elevator has zero clearance, I am unable to move it up or down it rubs
firmly on the rear of the vertical stabilizer. I haven't been able to put
bolts in the elevator ( too tight ).
Has any one had this problem and what is the fix.

By the way this is a quick build 3500. These parts were assembled in the
Philippines.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dave,
The quick builds were built incorrectly. The elevator has to be modified in the middle section, the opening in which the vertical fin fits. I don't have the info with me at home, but there was a mod published outlining the problem and the fix. It's a pain in the rear, but really just involves moving the small ribs outward, enlarging the opening, and re-riveting. I think the mod info is listed on the MAM Moose site, technical info.

Thanks,

I don't know if it ever stopped.. I do know that they changed the CNC
program to cut the elevator skin with a wider V at some point. I'll go out
to the marine container shortly ...and measure the V's bottom width and tell
you what doesn't work! ;O)

Fred/Moose builders... the V width at the bottom 2 7/8" ~ and the open end
14" wide... DOESN'T WORK !!!

If that's what you have, then you need to trim the skins back at least past
the rivet line.. move the ribs outboard.. redo the centre overlaps of same..
and rivet back together.

Supreme PITA.. and if I have to do the one I have here will be the third
time I've had it opened since the original builder riveted it shut. Hoping
he buys it back before I have to touch it again! lol

Thanks, Wayne and Andrew. I guess this is one fix I won't have the pleasure
of experiencing. ;-)

Mine are 3 5/8 and 14. ...wiping beads of sweat off brow.

[rebel-builders] Elevator Install

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:02 pm
by Jeff Micheal
Hi Dave,

The V opening was changed about 7-8 yrs ago, widened to aprox 3 5/8" (spar)
14" trailing edge. The elevator modification (Moose) listed on MAM's
(Patterson Aerosales) website was issued for all SR Series aircraft & a
similar issued for the Elite aircraft.

As for the installation of the elevator to stab, check the stab for
alignment of the hinge brackets for being true, also check the elevator
hinges (brackets). If the hinges are out of alignment, you never get the
stab and elevator bolted together. When both elevator and stab hinges are
aligned, start with installation of the inner bolts first, then work
outwards to the tip.

Cheers,
Jeff
