[rebel-builders] Oil filler tube too close to engine mount

My name is Kirk Hiner from Minnesota. My dad and I built Rebel R142 and we put an O-320 Lycoming in it. We also had a
problem with the Oil filler tube. What we did was buy a shorter Tube and cut the Rod off and remarked it for the new oil
level readings. Our oil door on the cowling is on the side and we can reach in and check the oil as we are able to get the
rod past the motor mount. Not quite as handy but it works.

Any Rebel out there with O-320 engine has the problem with oil filler tube contacting the engine mount?

[rebel-builders] Oil filler tube too close to engine mount

I wasn't the builder for this Rebel, I wonder if all Rebel with O-320 engine has the oil filler tube very close to the Engine mount.

I have looked at a couple of Elites, they don't have this issue. But I would assume Rebel and Elite use same kind of Engine mount.

I talked to TMX Engine factory, they pretty much suggested the same thing like you did, they even told me, you can get rid of the entire plastic tube and screw the cap direct to the engine, of course, you need to trim the rod to fit that missing part (more like emergency repair in the field or if the tube cracked in flight).

They also said, the tube can be bent by using a heart gun to soften the tube and form to a new angle.

But since my Oil cooler is adjancent to it, really don't have much room to adjust. I'm also curious, how much vibration or shaking between the engine and engine mount when we first start the engine?

Like to get more input. I'm located in Southern California. I made a solo cross country trip to Alaska in Late Sept 2009, landed on the AlCan Hwy, this is my personal web site with pictures, if any body is interested. www.chinesepilots.com

Hi Jay, nice video of the harding ice field. I live on Trail River between lower Trail Lake and Kenai Lake. I have an 0 320 Rebel and know the area and Vern and Lura well.

Hi Jay, I have a set of Downwind floats that I bought at Oshkosh last year but I haven't mounted them yet. I just finished doing some work on the Rebel including beefing up the area where the spring gear mounts, installed VGs and a larger matco tail wheel. I have attached a pic of it at Seward airport.
