Bruce, No the Rebel does not need a fuel pump due to the high wing
configuration! Just something else to worry about, spend money on and have
fail (and you would also need a back up boost pump to bypass it, in case of
failure). Keep it simple and make sure the engine will come with an
overhauled carb designed for gravity feed.
John Donaldson (owner of ATC) strikes me as the kind of guy that wouldn't
sell you an engine unless he would feel comfortable flying behind it
himself, and I have always been a pretty good judge of character! To the
best of my knowledge (and from what I've been told), a new crank will set
you back around $4000 to $5000 Cdn. Someone that knows for sure, please
correct me if I am wrong.
AME's (A&P'S I think you call them), that I know, seem to prefer Bendix mags
although Slicks are apparently cheaper to buy parts for. The Slicks are the
proper mags to be on an O-320-E3D.
Cams usually get the lobes re-ground, or plated and re-ground and a new set
of lifters installed. Sometimes you get a new cam if required.
John installs brand new lower baffles, retainer strap and plate, between the
cylinder instead of pounding out the old worn out one (this baffle makes the
airflow go through the cooling fins in each cylinder) He also uses a new
starter ring gear on the flywheel, instead of the old worn out one to ruin
you new Skytec starter!
I would get flying and worry about an electronic ignition as an upgrade
later, unless of course you can swing a good deal with the overhauler to
keep the old mags and put new Lazer (or similar) electronic stuff on. One
thing I had posted to the list before is that I would keep one old mag and
one new electronic one to have redundancy. Apparently the Lazer mags also
have a mechanical magneto built into them, for when the electronic one gives
up (or loses battery power), so probably best to just make both mags the
same!

outDoes the 0 320 install use a fuel pump? John from ATC says he found a run

*---------------------------------------------------------------------------more G's, US. any thoughts on Bendix mags as oppose to Slick? Wayne, feel
free to pipe in. I know enough not to use cylinder heads on a third
remanufacture, but what about the other equipment like new cams and lifter
bodies. I'm not sure what inter cylinder baffles and a ring gear are.
What is the favored ignition? Replace both mags or one? I'm ready for an
education here, so any one wants to put in there two cents it would be
appreciated.
