[rebel-builders] Fus 30 Doubler

I agree that it probably does not matter much Geoff but I'd also guess
that it will be quite difficult to actually do it that way especially if
any rivet holes are already drilled. I would not be brave enough to
attempt it. Either way the part is hidden under the stab anyway and
there will be lots more rivets for doublers around the elevator push
tubes and rudder cables. It is a tricky area and I recall upping a few
of the rivets to 5/32 when some #30 holes ended up a bit oval.
Aesthetically it is a non issue to me.

With much #%&@& and the part now replaced - (fits far better the
second time so I have got over the issue of stuffing up.)
But the question.
I have the back half of the stuffed FUS 30 (remember my issue was the
front) so I will use that as the doubler.
Is there any reason that the FUS 30 doubler at the construction stage
can't be placed inside the full FUS 30?
The end product would look at whole lot cleaner and to me whether the
doubler is on the inside or outside where it attaches to the Fin
shouldn't matter.
Anyone with any thoughts
Thanks in advance.

Geoff,

I'm building a Rebel and installed the doubler on the underside of the
horizontal bulkhead. Also increased the length of the doubler so it meets
the vertical bulkhead for the tail spring forward anchor bolt.

I can send you a pic the next time I'm at the hanger if you like.

Cheers,
Jeff

Hey Jeff,

Could you post the pic on the site. I too am interested in how and where the
doubler should be fit.

[rebel-builders] Fus 30 Doubler

Roland,

There's a pic of my FUS-30 installation at http://n254mr.com/node/61, which
shows a commonly used layout. Click on the thumbnail there to expand the
actual photo. (The rivets around the elevator tube holes weren't done yet,
of course.) There's a lot more about that job on the web site if you search
for "FUS-30". There's also lots of info about this task in the list message
archives on the builders web site -- using the same search term.

That was an early job for me, not long after I got the partially completed
project, and before I had a clue about metal work. So although the concept
is reasonably good, the workmanship isn't exactly pristine. :-( Now I have
a clue (it's around here somewhere) but still haven't been able to solve any
puzzles. ;-)
