[rebel-builders] Moose QB Stabilizer tip rib bracket

I believe the h-stab reinforcement was the result of a number of Moose using
the 2-blade V-530 prop & the M-14P radial reporting cracks at the outer
hinge bracket. Looking at your picture, Fred, and then examining what
appears to be at least a 0.125" 'L' reinforcement in the "official" pictures
I'd say there are simply several ways to approach reinforcing this area to
prevent a potential problem.

I had 245 hours on my first Moose with no cracking whatsoever at this point
on the h-stab. When building a new h-stab, I chose to fabricate a 0.032"
6061 T6 big "U" that runs the whole length of the side of the h-stab and
picks up both the hinge area and the opposite area, per se, on the front
spar.

The real issue, IMHO, is twofold:
- put some reinforcement there--what you have is probably just fine
- regularly monitor this location during every preflight and especially, of
course, during your annual condition inspection.

Happy to send pictures of my reinforcement if you want to see them. Again,
however, I suspect yours is Ok "as-is."

Ted

Hi Guys,

Question on the moose stabilizer hinge doubler. I just uploaded a picture
of the tip rib on my QB (2006) moose stab. In the manual, the part in
question is ST1008. In the manual, and in the service bulletin dated 11/04,
the part has 28 rivets in it. Mine only has twelve rivets and is about an
inch shorter than the one described in the manual and SB.

Also, there are 3 pictures in section SR-Moose (101) named:

stabmod1 - Official MAM Stab Hinge reinforce - 1
stabmod2 - Official MAM Stab Hinge reinforce - 2
stabmod3 - Official MAM Stab Hinge reinforce - 3

These pictures show an entirely different mod than what is in the SB and
what is on my stab.

So many options! ;-) What do you guys recommend?

Thanks,
Fred

I just uploaded two pictures to area 101 showing first--all the pieces in my
h-stab reinforcement & second, the assembled structure. I forgot that I had
added a second "L" doubler inside the bit "U" doubler to further reinforce
this hinge area. You can see the second, smaller "L" doubler in the first
picture.

Email me any questions. Again, though, I don't have "the solution" but
rather simply yet another way to help reinforce this potential problem area.

Not to open a can of worms, but as long as you are working on the tail
feathers, make sure you reinforce the elevator tip skins where they rivet to
the main portion of the elevator. You can see the cracks that form in this
area (if you don't reinforce it) in the files area, section 102
S/M-elevator. Pictures description is "Tip Skin Cracks."

[rebel-builders] Moose QB Stabilizer tip rib bracket

Fred,

Stab mod (1,2 & 3) listed in the SR Moose Section 101 are of the first mod
done to the stab to combat the cracking. The cost of machining of the parts
was too much and another method was then designed.

In addition to the Stab mod (which is the same as the wing mod) the tip rib
was modified to give more strength in this area as well on the stab.

From what I can see from your stab picture, the mod you have is fine and it
looks like you have the newer tip rib there as well. IMHO you're good to go.

Cheers,
Jeff
