Rebel - Flaperon hinge bushings and sleeves

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:49 pm

My next beef... and I see it on darn near every used Rebel I buy, or rebuild
that I get into around here... like the current wreck I'm rebuilding, that I
can't even get the steel sleeve out of the bushings..and yes I mean all 8 of
them!

The flaperons have a brass bushing in each end of them.... and then the
steel sleeve and then the mounting bolts. On darn near every airplane I find
that the steel bushing is seized/jammed into the brass bushing and the
flaperons are rotating and rocking on the loose bolt!

The whole idea is for the bolt to be TIGHT.. holding the steel sleeves..
TIGHT to the flaperon hinge bracket.. and the brass bushing is to rotate on
the steel sleeve.

In many cases I've found the brass bushing needs to be lightly reamed.. or
the steel bushing cleaned up nice to get a nice rotatable fit... and you
must keep it lubed with LPS 1.. or similar to stop the steel from rusting.
Get a nice fit while you are building... assemble the things with the bolts
TIGHT.. pegging the steel sleeve and keep the sleeve to bushing lubed. Even
with mine outside all summer at the lake and flying floats.. keeping them
lubed = only twice a year without any issues. I've seen countless Rebels
that these are seized/rusted etc and wonder if they have ever been lubed
from the get go.
