Hi all I read in the archives that wayne is using sikaflex 1A for floats
and curt tells me he's using sikaflex 240. are these the same thing and is
anyone retailing it in southern ont. One place I called in london tells me
they used to use sikaflex but now they prefer
3M 5200 marine adhesive and thats all they stock. Is this a suitable
substitute? has anyone tried both products?

Drew, you're not shopping at a Marina are you. I buy Sikaflex 1A from a
construction equipment rental outfit in Barrie (BNR Equipment Rentals) on
HWY 90. The intended usage of this product is to seal concrete expansion
joints, etc, but has a better adhesion strength to aluminum, than it does to
concrete. It also elongates 700% before shearing (for those extra large gaps
where stuff doesn't quite fit right!) It is available in various colours and
I have used both aluminum and limestone with both "hiding" well on bare
aluminum seams. It is time dated just like proseal, but it seems to be
useful for about a year total before the tube goes hard(were as I just used
some proseal on Friday, time expired 1994, and it is tack free today). I
have seen the aluminum style tubes of Sikaflex Marine variety (made in
France I believe vs California for the 1A) at our local hardware store (as
he stocks it for the local airboat builders and normal boaters and it seems
to work well for them) I think this is the 240 that Curt is using (is it
Curt).

The thing I like the most about the Sikaflex 1A (besides the fact that you
don't have to mix it, just stick a nail in the end of the tube until you
need some more) is that when used in the winter during low humidity periods
it allows the 7 hours per side working time to coat all the bulkheads and
get the entire side skin riveted in place, before it starts to "tack" up.
Once riveted, it leaves enough time to take a Popsicle stick and fillet all
the bulkhead seams and build "bridges" (read fill the large gap) between the
lower skin edge and the bulkhead. This lets you place the bottom skin later
with no worry as to sealing the bottom corners of the bulkheads as you have
already built a "flange" out of the sealer.

Just thought I'd throw in that ProSeal C-20 is supposed to also be
available for this purpose. Haven't tried to actually purchase any yet
though.

I am curious how long this Sikaflex lasts in the Marine environment and
whether it stops corrosion as well as Pro-Seal. I sure like the easier
to use aspect.

Ken and All,

I started using Sikaflex 1A because Les McGinus (spelled wrong I think,
sorry Les) asked a major float manufacturer (can't remember which one) what
they used for sealant, "supposable" so he could repair a set of their floats
that he owned. The guy's in the "booth" couldn't remember the grade of the
Sikaflex they used, but promised him they would send him a couple of tubes
when they got back to the shop. He was sent Sikaflex 1A and billed quite
heavily for it I may add (about 5 times what you can buy a tube for here). I
thought maybe they had thrown him a curve ball when I found out it was a
cement expansion joint sealer, but it has held up beautifully in Howard's 3
summers of use so far (and Les's two or 3 also), so I presume it is what the
CERTIFIED guy's are really using. I know from a conversation I had with
Robin Dyck that this is apparently what they are using, at either Kenmore
Air or Harbour Air, on the West Coast (in a salt water environment!)

As for corrosion I haven't found as much as a speck in Howard's (yet),
<although> I did find some in two compartments on the Factory built 1500's
installed on C-FOKM that were built using Proseal.

Ken, Drew, and others,

I first learned about Sikaflex in Gander, Newfoundland, several
years ago, and brought the word back here ...

The HUGE float overhaul operators there have been using it for
years, and far prefer it to ProSeal, as it gives them longer working
time, is easier to work with, and apparently stands up to salt water
(read - extremely corrosive !) operations just as well as ProSeal !
It seems like a safe alternative - I'm <not sure> about all the
others I hear about ....

The ONLY caveat with SikaFlex is that it WILL dissolve in
gasoline, over time - shouldn't be a big concern unless you're
carrying gas in your floats !! :-)

Maybe I should install a turbine on one of these Rebel's then, as Sikaflex
is apparently uneffected by Jet fuel!!!!!

WAYNE BOB & ALL
I've never built floats. But in 30+ years in commercial construction I've
used a variety of SIKA products including SIKA flex. There are cheaper
products, But I've never found a SIKA product that wouldn't do what they said
it would do if you followed the directions.

I used the 3M product to assemble my Zenair 950 amphibs.
It was supplied with the kit and seemingly is working fine.
No leaks in 4 years and 158 hrs.

In talking with Jay Frey of Edo he said they used either the 3M or the
Bos ... (spelling) product and that they felt that they both worked equally
well.

My experience w/ 3m-5200 is that it works very well, is a great sealant a
good ashesive, and is at least as messy to work with as pro-seal. It is not
2 part, but when you start working with it it gets everywhere, very sticky.
On second thought I think it is worse to work with than pro-seal, my opinion
only.

Hi all,
Yes that's the stuff I'm using Wayne. The biggest difference is that I load the caulk tube into the cartrige from my pneumatic caulk gun. That is the easiest way I've found to use this stuff. I've tested some of this stuf that's over one year old, and it acts great. Just seems to tack up quicker than the older stuff. But (these are always here) I still will not use stuff over 12 mo old on the floats. Paranoid i guess. As for the duration, The guy I talked to at the factory stated that this stuff is desigined to last for an unlimited time in the Marine enviroment. This was a tech person, not a sales type.
