[rebel-builders] Rebel tailwheel spring

HI!

Aeronca makes a 3 leaf 1.5" spring that A Spruce sells for about $150. I
took off the shortest leaf. Craig

[rebel-builders] Rebel tailwheel spring

Post by Ron Shannon » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:41 pm

Ron,

As mentioned earlier, I also used the Champ spring sans short top leaf. (I
think Craig may have gotten the idea from me, though others have done this
before me too.) The forward hole at the fuse works fine - no changes. You
need different height layers in the clamp at T-3 and different width opening
there than with the stock aluminum spring -- but that's only an issue if the
T-3 clamp stuff is already done and you're having to change it. I also
"opened" the very first, forward bend of the Champ spring by about 5 deg.
for a better fit through the T-3 clamp.

IMHO, the more significant issue is what tailwheel you're going to use, and
what its width at the spring connection is. The mount of the Iron Designs
tailwheel I have matches the width (1.5") and the hole diamter of the Champ
spring mount. I've put a photo of that spring-to-wheel mount point up at
http://n254mr.com/node/1155

I hope that helps.

Ron
