I did everything in gray/aluminum color sikkaflex 1A from Patene
masonry/building supply in Guelph. I used standard 300ml caulking
cartridges at around cdn$7.00 ea. I think they actually sell more of it
in the larger "sausages". I used 15 or 18 tubes of the stuff but there
is a fair bit of waste. It has a use before date of up to a year or so.

Other options are the marine polyurethanes but they are 3 times the cost
and harder to find around here.

There are several other polyurethanes from other manufacturers that I'm
pretty sure are equivalent but I stuck with the sikkaflex 1A since it is
the only one mentioned by name on this list.

you do all sealant of your floats with the sika flex?Is there only one
product by that name and where did you get it?I'm assuming it only
comes in the standard caulking tube size?I'm about ready for some
soon,thought I'd double check.
Thanks

It is a current trade name, so only one manufacturer but it comes in
quite a range of varieties, suited to different applications. Here in
Aus, it each is only available in standard caulking tube size, Jason

On my floats the last thing I did before joining 2 parts was scotch brite
it with a 2" brown wheel in my die grinder. It cleans up the metal really
fast And I felt that it was roughened enough to get good adhesion without
any primer.

I did not prime although I can see the temptation of priming the
interior side of the skins before assembly. It is not a deal breaker

I didn't think an extra layer of material was a good idea. I did
Scotch
brite roughen the surface and then clean with acetone same as we did
when building the airframe. If you are concerned about adhesion the
thing to use is probably the sikkaflex adhesion promoter for aluminum
that a couple of guys have mentioned. I did not use it and found the
adhesion was pretty good without it. I did try to only buy enough 1A
to
use before the 'use before date' but not sure if it really mattered
that
much.
