Have a nice trip Wayne and say Hi to Nigel for me.

Cheers,
Jeff

to
get all my ducks in a row so I can get to Wales and visit Nigel ! ;O)

All I can tell you Keith is that I've been at this for 16+ years... full
time.. every day (other than the last 5 summers that I've taken off for my
wife's health "getaway")... and AFAIK I have drilled out more rivets on
Murphy's products than anyone else that I know of... on this "ball" we ride
around on.

I have honestly lost track of how many airplanes that have left here
returned to flying condition.... that came in on a wing and a prayer (well
a
trailer actually)... heck some missing a wing all together as was the case
of what Bob P is currently flying.

I have a darn good stack of FUS-5's piled in the corner that are all
missing
a good portion of their ends from leaf gear rip outs... and why when any
customer demands that they really want them on their airplane I build with
solid inserts in the tube ends. If you are doing that you should be okay...
if not you're destine for trouble with the first couple chuck holes you
find.

Yes... as Jeff M points out both gear systems have their querks. Leaf
spring
gear rips the FUS-5's apart when you screw up.... and when it does adds a
lot of damage to what ever else hits the ground. Bungee gear and it's
aluminum legs is known to break as well, but the bungee gear generally
never
even bends the FUS-2 tabs let alone hurts the FUS-5's. The odd one that
ends
up on it's nose will push the rear drag brace fittings up into the floor...
but that's an easy fix compared to Fus-5 extraction. There's give and take
in both systems.. but generally if you do screw up there's less repair work
involved in the ones that were on bungee gear whether they have my die
spring struts on them or not. When they have my struts on there is less
chance of gear collapse as it's usually the aluminum bungee struts that are
first to fail.

The latest mess I picked up on Sunday.. had bungee gear and my die spring
struts on it. It was landed tailweel first in a full stall from about 6 or
8
feet up... buckled the entire tail 90 degrees at the FUS-29 wraps ahead of
the FUS-36 bulkhead. Twisted and destroyed every tailfeather piece except
the right elevator... then came down hard on the left main and pulled the
strut bolt right out of the axle gussets (no damage to my die spring
struts)
planted the airplane so hard on it's left wingtip that the FUS-3 upper
carrythru tube looks like a snake (something I've yet to see 'till now)..
bent both FUS-4 uprights and then went on it's nose and destroyed the
FUS-11's and the firewall, prop and spinner... oh and the motor mount as
well is trashed. Other than the gear strut tear out at the axle gusset and
left main leg bending, the landing gear took all this without damaging the
FUS-5's.. FUS-2 attach plates or the rear drag brace fittings or tubes. If
it was on Spring gear I think the cabin would be totalled.. IMHO.

aaahhhhh, come on Bob.....it can't be that bad!!! On a side note. I got a
ride in Si Smiths beautiful Rebel a few weeks ago. He has the spring gear
and I was absolutely amazed at the light control force that the ailerons
and elevator had. Compared to my Champ it was like comparing a Ferarri to
a dump truck...WHAT a difference!!!

Yes - they do LOOK good !

I'll let Wayne answer this one .....

I have to go wipe off the blood that's running down my cheek
and dripping from my chin ...... (biting tongue vigorously ... ;-) )

Okay guys.....I know this is a little off subject....but is the Spring
Gear really that bad? In the year 2020 when I get back to working on
Rebel
I had planned on installing the Spring Gear....only because that is what
I
ordered when I purchased the kit. I personally think the Rebel with the
Spring Gear and speed cowl make the Rebel a much nicer looking plane. I
think this has been rehashed before but can someone list the pros and
cons
of each style of gear? I have Murphy's 1800 Amphibs and figured they
would
be on the plane most of the time but now that I have found out I can not
lenghthen my strip long enough to safetly operate while on Amphibs, I
may
have to formulate other plans. Thanks,

If I had a Rebel's cabin floor completely open.... the only mod I would

considering to the existing spring gear would be getting rid of it and
installing the bungee style gear.
