[rebel-builders] Spring Gear vs. Bungee (or Wayne's Die spring)

Post by Jeff Micheal » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:37 pm

Hi Keith,

Each landing system has seen its issues, but the root cause of the problem
seems to be the landings (although each pilot says it wasn't a "hard"
landing, just "Normal") LOL, heard that lots over the years.

I've seen the results of each system failing. I installed spring gear on
the Rebel (no issue to date) and have a buddy that been flying (bush) with
his spring gear Rebel for quite sometime without issue. But on the other
hand I've also seen the results with less than 5 hrs of flight -- in that
particular case and many others it comes down to incorrect installation of
the spring gear.

That is my humble opinion based on what I know and have seen.

Cheers,
Jeff

Okay guys.....I know this is a little off subject....but is the Spring Gear
really that bad? In the year 2020 when I get back to working on Rebel I had
planned on installing the Spring Gear....only because that is what I ordered
when I purchased the kit. I personally think the Rebel with the Spring Gear
and speed cowl make the Rebel a much nicer looking plane.
I think this has been rehashed before but can someone list the pros and
cons of each style of gear?
I have Murphy's 1800 Amphibs and figured they would be on the plane most of
the time but now that I have found out I can not lenghthen my strip long
enough to safetly operate while on Amphibs, I may have to formulate other
plans.
Thanks,

If I had a Rebel's cabin floor completely open.... the only mod I would

considering to the existing spring gear would be getting rid of it and
installing the bungee style gear.

Hi Richard !

I just checked out a couple of Rebels with spring gear - the nuts
are indeed forward. I suspect the reason might be that the forward
FUS-5's have a large chunk of the end cut off to fit the taper of the
front FUS-70's (which you should have, to replace the old FUS-10's,
if you still have those). Cutting the angle might leave you with
half-holes left ....

You should have a good read through the archives, and study
the photos of spring gear fixes .... If you do the machined solid
inserts into the FUS-5's, then you won't be using the larger
holes too often anyway. If you can cut the front angles, and
still have the holes with proper edge distance, then it likely
won't matter whether they are front or back ...

Also, there are factory Service Bulletins for Spring Gear Mods -
check under the Elite Tech Support pages ...
