[rebel-builders] Rebel - Fus-5 Question
Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:36 pm
Hi Richard !
I just checked out a couple of Rebels with spring gear - the nuts
are indeed forward. I suspect the reason might be that the forward
FUS-5's have a large chunk of the end cut off to fit the taper of the
front FUS-70's (which you should have, to replace the old FUS-10's,
if you still have those). Cutting the angle might leave you with
half-holes left ....
You should have a good read through the archives, and study
the photos of spring gear fixes .... If you do the machined solid
inserts into the FUS-5's, then you won't be using the larger
holes too often anyway. If you can cut the front angles, and
still have the holes with proper edge distance, then it likely
won't matter whether they are front or back ...
Also, there are factory Service Bulletins for Spring Gear Mods -
check under the Elite Tech Support pages ...

Thanks for the response Mr. Patterson.
I have the spring gear, on a project that hasn't flown yet. In studying
the plans to get an idea of what to order for the new skins, and how to go
about it, I just happened to see that my plans called for drilling out the
ends of the rear tubes to install the three bolts (each side) that fasten
both forward and rear tube with their respective upright in the cage
assembly. When I looked at what I have on hand with the project, I noticed
that both forward tube ends have been drilled out for the three bolt that
orient with the nut to the rear.

Hi Richard !
I'm not sure what the problem is, if yours is already correct ...
just leave it.
If you have the bungee gear, I dont think it will matter much,
because somewhere in there, they even allowed the FUS-5's to
be cut in half lengthwise .... not that many do that anymore ...
If you have the spring gear, then there are a whole lot of other
considerations ....

I'm slowly rebuilding an older Rebel project (have removed all belly
skins
below the cabin because of corrosion), and I have a couple of questions
on
the forward Fuse #5 item.
Obviously I'd like to not have to drill out the several rivets on top
of the forward tube (fastening the forward cabin floor down), plus not
have to replace the forward tube.
If I do need to drill out the rivets and replace the forward Fuse #5,
is this tube 6061 or 6063?
thanks for any help!
