[rebel-builders] Flaperon Drain Grommets

I've noticed just about everything done here Terry. It seems that some
inspectors might want a drain in every bay. However the bays can
all drain down the trailing edge to the inboard low bay anyway so I put
one floatplane type vent on the inboard bay to suck air out and one
plain vent (think it was a 3/16" id nylon washer) on the outboard bay to
let air in. The washer makes a nice reinforced spot to melt a hole with
a soldering iron as per the polyfiber manual. I believe this satisfied
the intent of the rules.

Checked the archives for this subject with no joy, so I thought that
I would tap into the group for some ideas, suggestions and answers.

A fellow Rebel Builder and myself (with no previous fabric
experience) were discussing installing the Flaperon Drain Grommets,
and that if a grommet in every bay at the trailing edge, low point
was necessary. Is this a bit overkill? Can one just burn with a
soldering iron, a small 1/ 8 inch hole in each trailing edge end rib
(at the void) and call it good? Maybe adding single drain grommet at
the inboard bay at the low point of each flaperon? Both of these
Rebels will be going on floats eventually.

At this time we are leaning toward the small (1/8 inch) holes at the
trailing edge root rib and adding a single grommet at the low point
(inboard) at each flaperon, but still open for suggestions.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

[rebel-builders] Flaperon Drain Grommets

Hello Ken:

Thanks for the information Ken. Looked to me like a drain in each bay was a bit overkill. Will put a drain/vent at each end of each flap/aileron for drain and air circulation. Yes. They are the plastic (Nylon) washers. Glue on with Poly-Tack, solder iron hole (quickly) then cover with an approximately 2 inch round piece of pinked fabric with Poly-Brush and cut hole.

Thanks again Ken for your great response(s) to this group!

[rebel-builders] flaperon drain grommets

Put one every place that can trap moisture...every low point in the
fabric...OR don't use any. It will be the same work to re-cover and repair
the surface either way

How many "sea plane style" drain grommets should be used on the bottom of
the flaperons? Someone local suggested one for every bay, but that seems
excessive. I was thinking four per side, one in each corner of each flaperon
section.

How should they be installed? Adhesive? Before or after paint?

I put one seaplane grommet on the inboard end of each 6 foot surface.
Then a flat nylon washer in every bay in case the inspector wanted that
many but I only melted out the hole in the outboard most washer. I
figure condensation will work its way inboard (low end of each surface)
and there will be a little airflow out the seaplane grommet when in
flight. There is a gap at the rear of all the ribs large enough to drain
moisture inboard from each bay. I've never seen any indication of
moisture in the control surfaces though. I believe it is normal to glue
them to the fabric when covering the control surface and then put a
fabric patch over them with polybrush. Melt out the hole with a
soldering iron before painting.

Careful when you poke the holes...it's a very short distance to the other
side of the fabric...ask me how I know this. CW

Thanks all. It did seem like water should drain inboard, at least assuming
there's level parking for all but short term stops on land. I'm inclined to
do one at each end to cover the uneven parking scenario, and provide some
air cross flow for condensation. But I'm probably over thinking again and/or
overly influenced by the excessively wet winter here this year, allegedly
caused by a La Ni

I didn't have a small enough tip for my soldering iron so I heated a finishing nail with my propane torch. Worked great.
