Ken.. Curt may have used the old AN111 cable bushings that were used in the
day of hand weaving cable ends. I have some in the hangar and will see how
any of them fit into a thimble tomorrow. Our power is scheduled to be out
from 5am to mid afternoon though.. so will be tomorrow night with the
results.

The one thing for sure... it will change how you rig since the thimbles
originally just get slipped though the tang and the cable nico'd... and you
can't do that with an insert in place in the thimble.

Curt (or anyone)
Below is an old post.
Anybody know of a source for these thimble inserts to prevent the
thimbles from collapsing. Several guys have mentioned that this is a
problem. I thought I would machine up round 'C' shaped inserts but the
opening is too small for what I want. A triangle insert would work but
is a lot more manufacturing effort so if anybody knows of a source or
has a description it would be appreciated...
thanks

Hi Wayne
Yes I didn't think AN111's would be useful. I think Curt had an insert
that went inside the AN100 thimble. Indeed I see that Wick's sells such
a thing in nylon but only for 3/32 and 1/8" AN100's. I need something
for 5/32. I could make something similar but only if I trim the hole
edge distance considerably on the end of the stainless tangs. Actually
though I see that the hole edge to side of tang clearance on the 0.8"
tang is only 1/4" after drilling for the AN5 bolt and that would about
do it if I trim the end of the tang to that.

Hi Ken !

I have had that problem ! If I recall, Robin used carved pieces
of hardwood as inserts, held in place with a wrap of electrical tape.
I suppose Delrin would do too ... They were just round, with a lip
on one side ... could be turned easily in a lathe, and easy to pop out.

I'm trying to remember another easy insert someone came up
with .... getting old is no fun ! ;-(

Will write if it comes back ...

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:33 pm

I am not sure what problem you guys are trying to solve with these thimble
inserts. I have almost 600 hours now on my amphibs, with many, many rough
water landings, and a few on land, too. The last time I tightened any of my
cables was 2 days after my first flight on amphibs. That was 8 years ago.
They are still tight today.

The mistake I have seen is not tightening them after the initial few days.
If they loosen up too much and you don't tighten them right away, you will
stretch and bend quite a few things pretty good, and I have seen that. Even
those pins will bend. And repeated yanking on a hole, will definitely
elongate it. But if you tighten all your cables once after that initial
stretch of everything, you should be OK for a long time.

I think even with the inserts you will still have to tighten your cables
after a few days. It is not just the thimbles that stretch and bend. It's
the tangs, pins, maybe even the cable, and all the fastener joints that move
to find their final position. But the good news is you only have to do it
once.

Walter

round 6061-T6 with a rad to match the cable dia cut a slot in it to
fit the stainless attach plate then put it together and crimp the
cables.if you do not use them your cables will flatten out mine did in
a very short time.

Thank you everyone for the help.
I did end up doing the same as Dennis did below.
With several guys not having any trouble it is tempting just to push
some epoxy metal repair goop into that area and see what happens but
I've never had much luck with that stuff in the past.
