door catches

Post by Ron Shannon » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:33 pm

TIP: The female part of my Murphy-supplied door catch was not actually
centered between its mounting holes. It was off just enough that when I
inadvertently riveted it onto the bottom door with the ends flipped 180 deg.
from its position when the holes were located (Ch. 23, p.7) -- the top and
bottom latch parts did not match up to close properly. After several bad
words, eventually I realized the part just wasn't symmetrical vis-a-vis its
mounting holes. Fortunately, I have lots of experience drilling out rivets,
and turning the female part 180 deg. solved the problem. The obvious moral
of the story is that even though the parts look symmetrical, it's best to
mark the actual orientation of the part(s) when you're marking the holes so
you get them riveted on the same way... the first time!

If you have other mating problems, you're on your own.
