Drew,

I think it was you that Walter said had done a reinforcement of the
main wheel mounts in your floats. Is that correct? If so, do you have
pics of what you did?

Hi Gary I had to put in a triangular doubler to reinforce where the wheel
well side skin had wrinkled and was starting to crack. Other than that I
haven't done anything. I took some pics when I switched to die springs from
the dounuts so if I can find them it might show. On your other post my
wheel gear die springs just hang out in the wind.

Drew,

I'd really like to see those die spring photos (actually, I'd like to see
any amphib construction photos you have since I'll be building a set in the
future). I was told the dies springs are a smart upgrade to the doughnuts.

[rebel-builders] Float Wheel Well reinforcement

Thanks Drew. I would appreciate the pics. And thanks for the report on
the wheels gear die springs. I suspect they might be pretty draggy -
nothing like the floats of course.

Do you get any noticeable bounce from the die spring float gear? Some
guys complain about it on the wheel gear but I don't know any better
since I never flew one with the bungees. Took her up today with a 20
knot headwind on takeoff. Solo and only 32 gal of fuel, she climbed out
so fast I couldn't believe it was the same plane. If felt more like
Walter's with the extreme angle of attack and all.

Drew has one photo of a die spring in the archives
PICT0171.JPG
I just uploaded another one but I can't seem to find the ones I took of
the separate pieces. I recently saw Fish who was the first to fit these
springs and he is still pretty happy with the setup. He does land on
grass strips.

For main wheel reinforcements, a couple of us have used a "stringer"
that picks up the pivot bolt for the gear at the bottom of the bulkhead
and extends diagonally all the way up the wheel well side to the top
deck. I used a 1"x1"x 1/16" angle. My pivot bolt goes through the angle.
The problems that I'm aware of entail cracking of the wheel well sides
immediately behind the pivot bolt. Certainly a wheel well side skin
doubler in that area would also help transfer forward and rearward gear
loads into the wheel well side skins and into the bottom skins. The
bulkhead itself, even with those witch hats, is not really able to
resist forward and rear loads without flexing so much that with enough
cycles, cracks are inevitable in the 20 thou skins IMO. Ultimately the
forces have to make their way up to the top deck and then up to the
fuselage.

Ken
ps I must have counted wrong because I had enough rivets to finish the
floats after all.
