What type of undercarriage do you have, bungee, die spring, spring ?

I have almost complete parts for bungee gear, was mounted on mine then I
removed and switched to die spring, but still have a lot of the parts

Cheers

Hi Mike & Brian,

It's nice to see the parts exchange is alive, that's the same way I was able
to get parts the a/c I was working on. But just to beware, I believe the
MAM bungee gear did have a change in materials to accommodate the 1650 gross
Rebels.

I'm just noting the difference in serial numbers, 007 to 274.

Cheers,
Jeff

Brian, Michael,

I'd be interested too, as I'm building bungee gear with a few of the parts from
a damaged set (received when I sold/traded my cessna style gear). You got
there first tho Brian --- just between the two of you if there are parts left
you won't need.

BTW, I've taken a first look at building my replacement set out of 4130 steel
and it looks somewhat promising.

I have 2 complete slider tube struts for bungie gear for 1650 lb.
gross. Including p/n LG 37, 4, 5, 6-2, 35, 36, & 40.
Each strut has a small tag on it, that I think says LG 4B, I am
guessing that is the p/n for the complete assembly. Don't know
what there worth?
Also have a set of 4130 main gear legs, and compression struts
with the machined aluminum fittings, they are set up for 3/4"
axel. However the welding would require some reworking.

In looking over the damaged bungee gear I have, it looks like the drag
strut buckled right at midway where the holes are for the fairing piece
that attaches there. Granted this particular gear set hit an abnormal load
(snow bank at the end of an ice landing), but it does make me think the
holes at the middle point of the drag strut are not the best idea. Any
other thoughts on this?

Although I can't swear to the damage sequence, it appears that the main
gear legs crumpled backward following the failed drag strut. This ended up
particularly bad in terms of repair (of the other airplane) because it tore
off the fuselage lugs of the cage carry through gusset (Fus-2).

I'm back to thinking I'll probably use aluminum and pretty standard stuff
for all of my gear rework, with the exception of using a 4130 drag strut
(.050 wall thickness) and no holes in anything mid-span. As mentioned, I'd
be interested in anyone's thoughts on bungee gear strengths and weaknesses.

I'm not an engineer these are just ideas. It would seem to me that as the
main gear leg bent back it would push the fairing piece back causing the
drag strut to bend at the attach point. I think the weak point on the rear
strut is the unsupported bend at the top. If the gear hadn't failed when it
hit the snowbank the plane would have ended up on it's back. If you weld it
would probably be easier to make an all steel gear.

Interesting points Drew.
When I read the post I was reminded of a previous warning not to drill any
holes in the gear struts for fairing mounting due to weakening issues.
That said, my fairings are drilled and riveted into my gear legs. I've
wondered about rebuilding them to correct this, but...... on the amphibs
since 05 so no rush.
Were you up in Muskoka over the weekend? We spent the whole weekend flying
around visiting friends, and doing Henry's, put 3 fillups through the 0-320.
