I've
said before, one of these winters, I want to take the floats right off for
a
full inspection, but hopefully this fix will get me by for another summer.

Walter,

It's the front end cap that now have two small o rings (like the piston)
instead of one... if you buy the whole cap new. This is where my cyl. have
leaked as the rod moved in and out. I suspect this is why they changed the
design. I reused the rear end cap o rings because I didn't have
replacements
but they worked fine with no leaks.

I suspect it might have been easier to just remove the whole wheel to get
to
the cyl. and check the bearings/brakes and everything else, for piece of
mind, while you have it apart.

I suggest checking the axles for rotation in the c clamp with a mark. Both
my axles where rotating even with the bolts/nuts over torqued. I had to
sand
down the c clamp on a disc sander so it would grab the axle correctly.

I've had my wheels apart, too, for the grease fittings, but haven't
noticed
axles turning, but can try what you suggest to be sure.

Yesterday I took the cylinder apart with the rear end still attached.
However, was not able to keep the cylinder tube attached, so took it off
as
well. I had a further complication with the hydraulic hose attached to
the
front end cap making it difficult to get the piston rod out, but
eventually
got it. Then it was no easy job picking out that O-ring from that cap
while
inside the wheel well either.

I got some replacement O-rings from Julius (his home parts warehouse must
be
almost as big as Wayne's), and changed the big piston O-rings (they still
looked OK) and the little one in the front end cap for the piston rod.
Getting that little one into the end cap working through the float cap
hole
was even harder than getting the old one out. I also have the thin ones
for
the end caps, but am going to try and go with the old ones because of the
difficulty getting in there. I noted what Drew said, so will be watching
for
leaks.

So, today will put it all together, and see if my fix works. If not, I
guess
will have to take the wheels off and try again. At least the weather is
still crappy, so not missing any flying.

Walter,

I took my mains off to tap the axles for grease zerks and it wasn't that
difficult. Check the c clamps while your at it. I had to sand alum off
the
c
clamp to keep the axle from rotating. You can check yours by making a
mark
on the axle and see if it moves after a few landings.

We'll see, I might just do that. I was hoping for a quick fix and do
some
more flying this weekend, but the weather is wet today, and tomorrow is
not
looking good either. I was planning to take my floats off this winter
for
a
thorough check, and the timing obviously would have been good, but never
got
around to it, so will have to do it next winter, maybe. Am trying to
avoid
any down time this time of year.

But even with the wheels off, not sure if those small cut out wheel well
holes would allow me much room, especially trying to work upside down.

Walter,

Just take the wheels off, you wanted to check your bearings anyway and
it
would make the cyl fix easier to put it on your bench and take it apart
to
replace all the o rings while your at it.

[rebel-builders] 1800 amphibs

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:44 am

Just got back again from my hangar, and I think the job is finished. Managed
to get everything together again properly, and to my surprise no leaks. Had
to get all the air out again and tested it best I can, but it looks good.

It was brutal, though, and sure don't want to have to do that again.

[rebel-builders] 1800 amphibs

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:44 am

Yep, as far as I'm concerned. Don't think will make the 18th, as I won't be
leaving Nimpo until the morning of the 16th. Will meet up with Al P. that
evening or the next day, depending on the weather, and head east.

How about Bob P. and the Ramble? You guys still heading out west? Bruce G.
and I, and whoever else is along, want to spend the week after Arlington
flying around BC and to Nimpo Lake. There are a lot of great places here to
visit both on floats and wheels and would be happy to show people around.

I've had my wheels apart, too, for the grease fittings, but haven't
noticed
axles turning, but can try what you suggest to be sure.

Yesterday I took the cylinder apart with the rear end still attached.
However, was not able to keep the cylinder tube attached, so took it
off
as
well. I had a further complication with the hydraulic hose attached to
the
front end cap making it difficult to get the piston rod out, but
eventually
got it. Then it was no easy job picking out that O-ring from that cap
while
inside the wheel well either.

I got some replacement O-rings from Julius (his home parts warehouse
must
be
almost as big as Wayne's), and changed the big piston O-rings (they
still
looked OK) and the little one in the front end cap for the piston rod.
Getting that little one into the end cap working through the float cap
hole
was even harder than getting the old one out. I also have the thin ones
for
the end caps, but am going to try and go with the old ones because of
the
difficulty getting in there. I noted what Drew said, so will be
watching
for
leaks.

So, today will put it all together, and see if my fix works. If not, I
guess
will have to take the wheels off and try again. At least the weather is
still crappy, so not missing any flying.

Walter,

I took my mains off to tap the axles for grease zerks and it wasn't
that
difficult. Check the c clamps while your at it. I had to sand alum off
the
c
clamp to keep the axle from rotating. You can check yours by making a
mark
on the axle and see if it moves after a few landings.

[rebel-builders] 1800 amphibs

Okay...just making sure the cottage calendar is marked correctly so I can
have the place cleared out for your arrivals. Make sure everyone brings some
long lines..couple 50 footers each + your normal dock ropes...I'll have lots
of rope around as well and we'll be fine.

Yep, as far as I'm concerned. Don't think will make the 18th, as I won't
be
leaving Nimpo until the morning of the 16th.

There are a lot of great places here
to
visit both on floats and wheels and would be happy to show people around.

Mine only has a single O-ring there, so I guess that explains it. Like
I've
said before, one of these winters, I want to take the floats right off
for
a
full inspection, but hopefully this fix will get me by for another

Walter,

It's the front end cap that now have two small o rings (like the
piston)
instead of one... if you buy the whole cap new. This is where my cyl.
have
leaked as the rod moved in and out. I suspect this is why they changed
the
design. I reused the rear end cap o rings because I didn't have
replacements
but they worked fine with no leaks.

I suspect it might have been easier to just remove the whole wheel to
get
to
the cyl. and check the bearings/brakes and everything else, for piece
of
mind, while you have it apart.

I suggest checking the axles for rotation in the c clamp with a mark.
Both
my axles where rotating even with the bolts/nuts over torqued. I had
to
sand
down the c clamp on a disc sander so it would grab the axle correctly.

Wayne,

Sorry I will not be able to make the trip east this year. I would have enjoyed meeting you in person. BC, Nimpo and meet Al on the return trip through Montana is all the time I'm allowed from the War Department (significant other).

Walter, We could stop at my lake home 0n Priest Lake as we head east to meet Al in Libby. Or meet Al at Priest Lake which is not far from Libby. You can get cleaned up, fed and rested for your long journey east. There is moa gas 5 miles down the road at Indian Creak State Park in case somebody needs gas. I Have several 5 gallon plastic cans there.

Now, if I can only remember where I put my passport. Hmmm!

Yeah, that sounds good, too, and will have a chance to see your new place.
Is there room for multiple planes at your dock?

You don't need your passport (although it is recommended), but don't also
forget your birth certificate this time, or you might have to stay in Canuck
land a little longer than you had planned.

BTW, have a new HDV camera (Sony HDR-HC3) that will want to try out with
some air to air stuff, if I can get you to go high enough to include some
mountains and snow in the shots.

Wayne,

Sorry I will not be able to make the trip east this year. I would have
enjoyed meeting you in person. BC, Nimpo and meet Al on the return trip
through Montana is all the time I'm allowed from the War Department
(significant other).

Walter, We could stop at my lake home 0n Priest Lake as we head east to meet
Al in Libby. Or meet Al at Priest Lake which is not far from Libby. You can
get cleaned up, fed and rested for your long journey east. There is moa gas
5 miles down the road at Indian Creak State Park in case somebody needs gas.
I Have several 5 gallon plastic cans there.

Now, if I can only remember where I put my passport. Hmmm!

Okay...just making sure the cottage calendar is marked correctly so I can
have the place cleared out for your arrivals. Make sure everyone brings
some
long lines..couple 50 footers each + your normal dock ropes...I'll have
lots
of rope around as well and we'll be fine.

Yep, as far as I'm concerned. Don't think will make the 18th, as I won't
be
leaving Nimpo until the morning of the 16th. Will meet up with Al P. that
evening or the next day, depending on the weather, and head east.

How about Bob P. and the Ramble? You guys still heading out west? Bruce
G.
and I, and whoever else is along, want to spend the week after Arlington
flying around BC and to Nimpo Lake. There are a lot of great places here
to
visit both on floats and wheels and would be happy to show people around.

Had

It was brutal, though, and sure don't want to have to do that again.

[rebel-builders] 1800 Amphibs

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:56 am

Not under floated in my opinion. Have had mine loaded up pretty good on the
water, and always got off easily (near sea level that is). I think these
floats are a perfect match for the Rebel. The problem with larger floats is
weight, and that means you will have to carry less in your plane, so what's
the point.

I'm considering the 1800 amphibs build project this winter. I have heard
some say that they're a little under floated for rebel. I'm wondering if
those of you that are flying these floats are satisfied. Thanks for any
comments.

Clay:

I had my Elite on Montana 2200s side by side with a Rebel on Murphy
1800s the other day, and there is a very significant difference. Not
only do you get more floatation, but the keel clearance on land is about
3 times as much, and the rigging is much more substantial. I'd say the
1800s would be problematic on the Elite, though they're probably OK on
the Rebel if you keep the weight down. Of course, nothing is free, and
the Montanas are quite a bit heavier.

BTW, I have posted a few Elite pics on users.xplornet.com/~ahepburn

O-320 powered Rebel sits out of the water just fine on 1800's...even at
2000lbs all up weight. As Walter pointed out the extra weight using
oversized floats = lost useful load or leaving fuel behind. As Alan has now
pointed out Kinden uses heavier vertical strut material, as the MAM stuff
for the 1800's always looked suspect, BUT I'll tell you and have pictures
and the scrap parts to prove it...you can stretch your Rebel 3" and shorten
it 2". Crumple the float bottoms up as much as 6" from bow to step, buckle
the top T rails and split the side skins at the step.....and the vertical
struts supplied by MAM and all associated attach fittings are still perfect
and reusable...so what's the point of heavier struts?

Okay...back to fishing at 7am ! :O)

I'm very satisfied with my floats and I think they are large enough for the
rebel I've more freeboard with my floats than any other plane I've flown.
The only problem I've had is poor quality plumbing materials for the
amphibs that I ended up totally replacing.
