Unfortunatly your right not much water around Saskatoon (other than the river
running through it)

If you are running on floats we have a great little cabin on Wakaw lake. Aprox
100 kms from the city.

We are quite a bit south east of Yellowknife.

What's your favourite way to dock/ramp your floatplane??

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:40 am

Hi Wayne I read that book too. What I meant to ask was how well they climb
a boat ramp with the wheels down.

At 10:53 PM 11/2/2004 -0500, you wrote:

About 20 feet out from the dock you go full back stick and power to plow a
water wave ahead of you and this both wets the ramp and cushions the keel
hitting the ramp and you power up until it "sticks". Tie the sucker down.
Then to leave you hang onto a rope attached to your rear cleat, push down on
the bows of the floats to get it to unstick and slide backwards into the
water. Use the rope to spin the plane around and pull up backwards to board
and drive away.

Sure others have better advice..mines all read and no practical.

That brings up another question I've had. How steep a boat ramp will the
plane climb or is going down a bigger challenge

At 10:36 PM 11/2/2004 -0500, you wrote:

you don't even know who they are!!

Sorry to anyone that thinks I (we) get a bit off track from time to time
around here...but I think it brings us all much more together as a
"family"
with common interests and uses of airplanes. I know talks of guys having
fun
with the finished product might be a little frustrating to the guy just
starting his tailfeathers,...but I know it helps "light a fire" under a
number of builders out there to get the thing done and enjoy it.

As for beaching the float plane. I'd be inclined to find a dead fall tree
or
drift wood to put under the float keels if beaching for any time period.
Sand can be pretty abrasive and don't forget that stirring it up around
the
amphib gear mechanism is not the greatest idea. All depends on the
shoreline
I guess. Some places around Georgian Bay ( The rocky section of Lake
Huron)
you can just put the gear down and drive right up onto the rock shoals.
On
other mixture shorelines I'd be temped to put the gear down and then pull
it
backwards onto the beach as best I could so the tires and not the keels
where on bottom and tie off with those 2 x 50' ropes you should be
carrying
(at a minimum). At least that way if the wind comes up in the night the
tires are banging bottom and not that .025/.032 aluminum sheet.

Cheers,
Wayne

What's your favourite way to dock/ramp your floatplane??

Post by WALTER KLATT » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:40 am

Haven't found one yet that was too steep too climb. It's going down them that scares me, especially the narrow ones. It's the differential brakes I don't trust, because if one is grabbing more than the other, you could be in trouble. On a steep one, I like to have one or more persons hanging onto the back when going down.

And then don't forget to pull up that gear before trying to take off. I still remember that million dollar turbine Beaver at Nimpo Lake last summer that forgot to do that. And that was with about 30 BCFA member pilots watching. It was amazing to see how fast that big prop could grab water.

Drew Dalgleish

What's your favourite way to dock/ramp your floatplane??

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:40 am

Thanks Walter There's a boat ramp around the corner from our cottage with
a nice grass area that I could probably get my tie down screws into. I've
considered getting it out of the water when stormy weathers coming but
since it's right beside the highway I'd be worrying all night about the
storm and vandalism.

Haven't found one yet that was too steep too climb. It's going down them
that scares me, especially the narrow ones. It's the differential brakes I
don't trust, because if one is grabbing more than the other, you could be
in trouble. On a steep one, I like to have one or more persons hanging onto
the back when going down.
And then don't forget to pull up that gear before trying to take off. I
still remember that million dollar turbine Beaver at Nimpo Lake last summer
that forgot to do that. And that was with about 30 BCFA member pilots
watching. It was amazing to see how fast that big prop could grab water.

Hi Wayne I read that book too. What I meant to ask was how well
they climb
a boat ramp with the wheels down.

About 20 feet out from the dock you go full back stick and power
to plow a
water wave ahead of you and this both wets the ramp and cushions
the keel
hitting the ramp and you power up until it "sticks". Tie the
sucker down.
Then to leave you hang onto a rope attached to your rear cleat,
push down on
the bows of the floats to get it to unstick and slide backwards
into the
water. Use the rope to spin the plane around and pull up
backwards to board
and drive away.

Sure others have better advice..mines all read and no practical.

What's your favourite way to dock/ramp your floatplane??

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:40 am

I guess the only real limitation for going down the ramp would be that the
angle difference between the water and ramp wasn't steeper than the rear
keel slope. Otherwise if you got the forward section of the floats into the
water and they went level the heels of the float would drag down the ramp.

I would also be tempted to go down a steep ramp with the ramp engine off and
let it just roll under braking. Would hate to have it get going too fast....
submerge the float noses and catch the prop in the water. Have to go pretty
deep to hit the prop if the floats are mounted per MAM's instructions, but
better safe than sorry.

Amphibs use to be able to come up the Penetang Harbour boat launch ramp and
park in the trailer parking area...but when they redid the ramp they made it
too steep and then of course there's that darn booth (for the bugger that
collects $15 for every in/out..even from town residents) that's in a wings
way !

That brings up another question I've had. How steep a boat ramp will
the
plane climb or is going down a bigger challenge

What's your favourite way to dock/ramp your floatplane??

Can't speak about Rebels, but I can tell you that a Kitfox on amphibs
with a 912 climbs ramps extraordinarily well. Surprised the heck out
of me, actually. A whole bunch of fun, too.

If your differential braking is bad or you have a weak brake and you get
turned at an angle so one float hits the water first and digs in, our worse you
may run off the side of the ramp, you can flip the plane. It has apparently
happened as I have seen pictures in Dale Deremers Book.

I can remember a very long ramp at Fort Langley last summer. It was not so
steep but very long and I had a weak brake at the time, Coming down I start to
turn so I chose to stop braking as much to keep it straight and I hit the water
going faster than I would have liked but the Rebel did just fine.

Keep it straight on the ramp is my experience.
