prop bolts

Sounds good Murray. I just get a little too worried sometimes and "cut"
threads have to be very clean. Just be sure to actually do the bolt "torque"
check every year during your annual. Try giving them a turn with a wrench
(Even with the safety wire in place) and hope you never find a broken one. I
have once and it turned pretty quickly! You have plenty of grip if you can
put your finger tip pad in the bushing hole and feel the bolt end. Proper is
a thread or two protruding, but even a thread or two short (which happens
using normal AN's) where you can feel the end of the bolts is fine.

Cheers,
Wayne

Wayne:
I threaded them about 1/4" so that they wouldn't bottom on the threads in
order to get as much thread grip as possible.

prop bolts

I'm not as forgiving on this as Wayne. Anyone who says you can safely
cut more threads on an AN bolt doesn't have a clue as to how much that
will weaken the bolt. Cleanliness has nothing to do with it. Basic
metallurgy and grain structure makes this a big no no. The strength and
resistance to fatigue cracking is is hugely higher for a rolled thread
with proper heat treating. Please consider buying new bolts, adding
washers, or using SAE grade 5 or 8 bolts. I would not accept a ride in
an aircraft with cut threads on the prop bolts. If you think I'm
over-reacting, take a look at something like "Engineer to Win" by
Carroll Smith ISBN 0-87938-186-8 a large easy to read paperback popular
in large bookstores for about US$20.

I
FYI

have found out that the AN bolts are now the standard prop bolt. With
about 9/16" thread I called the prop shop here and asked if it would
harm the bolt to thread it some more. They said no as long as you really
cleaned the the threads. I also paid particular attention to the last
thread and filled it a little to get rid of the burr.
