I gather the Rebel does not have any trouble getting on the step when
heavy like some floatplanes do? If it does, higher struts might help
rotating forward onto the step...

On another type, I've heard ;) of occasions where all the pax positioned
themselves as far forward as possible until the aircraft was on the
step. Then while still a motorboat, seat belts were fastened, then
takeoff was completed...

You know, this could be a big point. It definitely does
rotate forward very easily, even when heavily loaded. I
haven't flown in Steve's so can't compare, but would
like to see how his does when loaded to 1900 plus.

1800 Amphibs

Post by Walter Klatt » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:15 am

Just wondering how many hours I can expect out of my tires,
bearings, hydraulics and brakes. So far I have over 200 and
everything is still working fine. My treads are getting a little
thinner, but the brakes still seem to be OK. I grease the wheels
every time I return from the water, and the bearings still seem
tight. The gear mechanism doesn't show any signs of wear yet. I
might take my floats off next winter and take everything apart
for inspection. But wondering if I should start looking for some
spare parts, like tires, so I don't get stuck in the summer. Any
thoughts?

Thanks Wayne. I remember some talk on the list about these Chin
Chan tires, and I can go search the archives. Where did you get
them? Haven't asked MAM, but expect they must sell replacement
parts, and do they keep stock?

Walter, we waited a year and a half for Chin Cheng (or
what ever it is) to
produce their next run of tires. I was able to pick
one up on Ebay to
replace a flat spotted..brand new tire (thanks to the
guy I sold the
airplane too landing with his foot on the brake
pedal), to buy some time.
When we finally were able to get the tires I got a few
and have 6
tires/tubes here wrapped in plastic and stored away in
the dark, so if
anyone gets stuck and can't locate them locally I'll
bail you out by either
a replacement process or outright sale.

Howard's has about 230 hrs on floats, but not a lot of
pavement landings so
tires are like brand new as are his brake pads. The
bearings however see
lots of water (and not much rolling which is probably
harder on them than
your situation) and are holding up nicely going into
the 6th full season
since being replaced, after the first season, with the
additon of the full
wheel of grease "policy". The pivots , knuckles, shock
struts etc are all
holding up well with no extra slop detected yet.

Hi, Bob. Yes, I still have fond memories from last summer where
you set a good example with us rookie ramblers, and carried
spares of everything with you. I need to start to doing some of
that, too, as my luck may run out one of these trips.

Speaking of rambling, I remember you taking a lot of pictures on
our trip. Can't remember though, if you were using a digital
camera. Wouldn't mind seeing some if you still have them.

Here's a site I use for posting pics that is good up to 100 megs,
no nuisance pop-ups, and you can store full high res pics without
killing the guys with dial up internet. They can be sorted and
displayed several different ways, and viewed as thumbnail, low
res or full high resolution. Here's a sample URL from my last
Wings Over Canada trip.
http://www.grovestreet.com/jsp/picview.jsp?album=32800
Choose the "Descending" and "40 pics" options.

Good luck on your upcoming rambles. We are planning a couple out
west here this year too, as you know.

Which reminds me, too, it should be about time for Murray to make
a trek out here.

Hi Walter !

You've done well ! Especially if the wheel bearings

Personally, I never flew any distance without taking
along one of each size spare tire & tube - they can be hard
to get sometimes, in out-of-the-way places ... :-(

Probably time to order a spare set of main & nose

At least one set of brake pads, and wheel bearings
might not be a bad idea, either. They don't deteriorate
if well stored, and you might avoid a long spell of missed
flying ! The bearings are pricey, and sometimes hard to
get - ask Wayne !! (He has the part numbers ...)

Hope you enjoy another summer of fun !! We're
looking forward to a good one - Rebel Ramble '04 goes
North To Moosonee, from July 17th to July 24th, then

see her !

MAM might have stock and they are just up the road from you!. Call over and
ask for Christine. They were around $32/tire before. I was just use to going
down to the local Goodyear dealer and they brought them in overnight so
didn't bother with MAM. Then the last time I needed them they were
unavailable and unknown when the next mfg run was going to be. After myself
and another local guy with 1800's on his Luscombme had waited on them for
over a year he went to a large Toronto dealer and we then waited 4 more
months for them to come in along with the dealers full marine container of
rubber from China/Tiawan or where ever. We bought enough to keep us in
spares for a little while!

Wayne G. O'Shea

1800 Amphibs

Bob, First order of business was to remove and throw away those "grunchy"
bearings when I took ownership of FOKM!! :o) (along with the cracked
sidewall tires)

Step two was to replace them with Chrome Plated variety and fill the entire
wheel with grease and the axle a grease journal and fitting. Hopefully they
will last like Howard's that is going in for it's 6th season on the grease
filled wheel can't intake water philosophy.

The brake pads are easy to obtain from any AMO's parts cupboard
Rapco/Cleveland 66-106's.

The bearings on the other hand can be like the tires. Depends on whether
Timken is making CP's or not making them. Got them overnight once and many
months later the next. Have a spare set of those tucked away as well for a
rainy day. Over $400/set of four bearings and cones.

Cheers,
Wayne

Hi Walter !

You've done well ! Especially if the wheel bearings
aren't grunching when taxiing !! ;-)

Personally, I never flew any distance without taking
along one of each size spare tire & tube - they can be hard
to get sometimes, in out-of-the-way places ... :-(

Probably time to order a spare set of main & nose
tires & tubes - you'll have them - just in case - and can
replace the old ones next winter, if not needed sooner.

North To Moosonee, from July 17th to July 24th, then
down to Oshkosh ! :-) Can't wait to get the Rebel
back from the paint shop - you'll finally be able to
see her !

I live in Spokane, WA and I just went to the local tire store and ordered a
spare Chin Chan nose tire, main tire, both tubes and had them in 3 days.

Wayne, what is the "full wheel of grease policy"? I haven't done anything to
the wheel bearings grease wise since I started flying 40 hours so far. Should
I be greasing stuff?

Bruce
