G'day
The saga with proseal continues! Somehow I have managed to spill most of the accelerator. Unfortunately here in Australia we cannot readily get Proseal and I was wondering if anyone knew whether I could use something other than the factory supplied accelerator, and if so just what that would be.
It also appears that I might not have enough Proseal to finish the tanks. Has anyone any experience with other sealants that may be satisfactory and be compatible with Proseal.
Thanks and regards
Ian Donaldson

Hi,
I recently had to buy more proseal for my fuel tanks. The
local aviation supply store, Reeve Air Motive in Anchorage,
sells as proseal a product made by Flamemaster with a Mil Spec
Number: MIL-S 8802F, Amend.4, Class B-2 Type II. My IA and
fellow A&P's state this is 1422 proseal. Does anyone know for
sure? I dont want to have to do this job more than once....

The details are in the archives but I believe 1440 is the preferred
substitution for compatability with the 890 that MAM supplies. However
my manual also says that anything meeting the Mil-S 8802F is OK. I
personally would not care who manufactured the stuff but some of the
variants use different hardeners and it seems it is a good idea to stick
with the same hardener if you can.
My MAM manual lists the following as equivalent:
GOAL GC408B
CPS 890-B2
PRC PR-1440B
3M EC1675B

Most builders try AeroSpares, on Torbram Rd. in Malton FIRST,
then next is Leavens - just around the corner, on Derry Rd. - often
a difference in price ! ;-)
These are also good sources for LOTS of other aircraft needs !

Do you guys have an Aviall near by? I was surprised I could go over to Halifax
International (YHZ) and order it from them. They don't stock it because of the
time out issue but will bring it in in a few days.
They carry the Flamemaster brand MAM supplied with our kit.

Yesterday Leavens had a large box of proseal out with a clearance price
of $20. and the fellow offered to give me a "much better price" than
that if I wanted some. Looked to be all semkits which are probably only
3.5 oz but you might get a heck of a deal if you took a large number of
them. Was a bunch of 870b2 and some other types. Presumably it is all
time expired but I would not hesitate to use it as per numerous comments
in the archives.

been stored in a cool area.) How much can I expect to use on one wing of

I used my Proseal before the expiration date, but I am not sure about your case. Chances are it would be ok, but the effort involved if it is not is significant so you might think about replacing it. A mistake that I made was not checking into proseal types. I would have used the stuff that works in both av-gas and auto-gas if I had checked. MAM ships the av-gas verision. It will come apart in autogas. Something to consider. I used 3 quarts on my 2 80 gallon tanks.

Rick, I do not know of any Proseal that will come apart in autogas. It is
different types of sloshing compound (that I highly recommend staying away
from anyhow/anyway/anywhere in a fuel tank) that MAM used to tell you to
use, after the proseal cured, that can be effected by alcohol in autofuel.
As for Roger's Proseal, if it has been stored in a cool place, go for it!
Heck, his is only 3 months out of date. I keep mine in a cold fridge and
take it out the day before I want to use it to get it up to temperature and
this time I set it on my mill table about a foot above my electric 6Kw
heaters output to get it warmed up. Make sure you stir both parts very well
before using them, to make sure the ingredients are well blended. Then mix
by WEIGHT 10 to 1. I have cans in the fridge going back to 1994. I just used
the last of the 1994 can early last week and some of a 1997 can that hadn't
been opened yet. The 1997 can had a hard skim formed over the top and I
pulled it out with a pair of pliers to find very soft material underneath
that mixed just fine. The mixture hardened up to be tack free over a 2 day
period in the shop at about 55*F and now a week later is nicely cured. I was
doing float repairs but, based on it's premix consistency, wouldn't have
hesitated to use this "old" stuff on a fuel tank.
Regards,
Wayne G. O'Shea

different types of sloshing compound (that I highly recommend staying away
from anyhow/anyway/anywhere in a fuel tank) that MAM used to tell you to
use, after the proseal cured, that can be effected by alcohol in autofuel.

Proseal is October, 2002. Any advice on whether it is still good? (It's
been stored in a cool area.) How much can I expect to use on one wing of
a Moose?

Proseal
Wayne, Roger,
I called Bergdahl the manufacturer of Proseal (775-323-7542). They confirm your view Wayne, they do not see an issue with Pro-Seal P/S 890 class B with auto fuel. Somewhere along the way I was told by someone it was an issue. I am very glad to hear it is not!!
