Thanks Jim My buddy has been waiting since before christmas for an order so
I was wondering if thats going to be the norm.

I've bought a few things Drew - visited twice and I found the prices not
bad and the bonus was that I didn't have to have them shipped from the
US. They basically convert their US catalog prices into Canadian dollars
and tack on our two lovely taxes.
Do allow a little time for them to get the order together but you can
buy 10 rivets or 1000, 2 screws or a 100 so it takes a little time to
put them all in little individual bags

Hi Jim !

Should have answered online, in case someone else is looking ...

Aircraft Spruce sells the Val Com 760 for about $625 USD -
and there's now a local office in Mississauga !

<I'd> definitely get a good GPS - AvMap EKP-IV - BEFORE
getting a transponder --- at least YOU will know where you are ! ;-)
(I don't necessarily want THEM to know where I am ... ;-) )

......bobp

Heck I'd get a bad GPS before I got a transponder. I'd even rather have a
loran C.
Has anyone here bought anything from ASS Toronto yet? I'm already hearing
rumors of poor service and higher prices.
Drew

I purchased the bottom end Garmin GTX320 transponder from them before
they opened the store and was very pleased.

Decision was based on a couple of things.
1. Narco advertised their two display digital as being able to transfer
the screen displays left to right so it could still be used after the
first display died. I took that to mean that the old rotary knobs were
not a bad thing... Plus many of those displays just don't like the
temperature extremes that sometimes occur around here.

2. The cheap xponder plus a $400. PCAS from Zaon was cheaper than a
digital display transponder and provids far more info. ie a display of
transponder code and altitude that I'm squawking PLUS a display of any
local traffic. I am pleased that I did that. The Garmin has a good
reputation as well, is only about 7 inches deep, and it came with the
installation kit.

3. Too may guys whizzing by me and obviously not seeing me as we all
skirt the YYZ mode C airspace. At least with mode C I now know that the
heavy iron and business aircraft are unlikely to hit me. With the PCAS I
get a warning that a transponder is near me. Often it means that I make
the extra effort to spot someone that I otherwise would not see and that
often even helps me find another aircraft in the circuit who is NORDO,
not talking, or not talking in a language or accent that I understand.
More private aircraft than I imagined are indeed squawking mode C around
here. I did not really need a xponder for ATC!

4. I find my $100. ancient hardware store lowrance gps way way better
than loran and it provides incentive for me to keep a map handy which I
don't always do when I have a fancy moving map gps available. Besides
being a little bit lost (err temporarilly unsure of my exact position)
never hurt me yet but I'm pretty sure a collision would ruin my day...

5. I have no problem with the reputable models of older cavity tube
transponders but the guys who are upgrading to mode S seemed to want too
much money for a used unit with no warranty. Presumably used units will
become cheaper though.
