Flaperons - Rebel

Post by Robert and Olga Johnson » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:46 am

Great memory Ken. Yes I did add a lever - Thumb operated to go into slots
on the plate radius. Works great and can be easily released regardless of
the pressure on the flaps. Believe me I know ( several times) - Bob J.

I believe Bob J. actually did modify the flap handle with a simple nifty
thumb or finger actuated latch instead of the factory setup...

I'm not strong enough to get the pin into the last hole when I'm flying

if I do it on the ground it is very tough to get out as well so I never

full flaps for landing and usually use no flaps for take off. I'm sure it
would work if I made a new dog leg flap handle instead of the short by the
book one but I've never really felt that more flap is neccessary. In a
full
forward slip my plane drops almost 2000fpm how much faster could you
possibly need to get down as long as you're not on fire ;)

I like the auto flap idea. I never thought of it in quit those terms but I
always use full flaps on take off and landing because they adjust themselves
with air speed somewhat. A slip will get you where you want to be if the flaps
aren't doing the job. I don't think it's worth the effort and time to redesign
the system. Build it and get flying is my thought. You can always change it
later if you're not happy.

IF you guys go to Mike's Rebel archive files .... the R-Control Systems
then go to "New flap handle" you will see the flap handle I designed in
'99

NOTE : I have now REdesigned it , and made the handle TWICE as long
(for more leverage) - it's now about 12" from the pivot hole to the
actual handle - and is MUCH better !
(just alter the handle & the matching locking bar to suit)

I'll get some updated pic's done "soon" - I hope !

This design uses ALL the original equipment EXCEPT the handle !

1) You close your hand to unlock the flap lever
2) This flap handle changes the direction of travel - you pull down to
GET down flap
3) The position of your arm and the strength you have is much better

The flex in the system is still there - but the flap handle is a lot
more "user friendly"

Flaperons - Rebel

Post by Joel Jacobs » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:46 am

In my case, I'd like my dad to be able to fly it and he has bad shoulders
and wouldn't be able to reach the overhead lever. I feel a little twinge now
and again when I reach certain ways so I'll probly have similar problems
when I'm his age. So I'd really like to avoid the overhead flap lever now
and not have to worry about it in the future...
