Warp Drive hub

Post by Phil Stubley » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:22 am

Hi Clay,

I have been flying behind a 4blade Warp drive for 5 years, (not many hours
though) and don't know what the Braking effect is either. Sounds like
whoever had that sensation had the angle set too fine. Great for takeoff
but lousy cruise. I get 107 mph cruise and great performance off the
ground.

I originally intended to be on floats and that is what Warp recommended at
the time, long before anybody was using the 3 blade prop on big engines.
When Jack Wieb got the OK from Warp to use his 3 blade on a 160 hp lyc I was
surprised and questioned them several timesa as to whether I had the right
prop. They assured me it was right, and I haven't had any problem or
dissatifaction with it.

Phil.

Hi Del,
I don't think that I'm going to fly with the 4 blade now that I hear about
this "braking" effect that everyone is talking about and I'm still nervous
about using the 3 blade on my 0320. I'll just use the 4 blade for ground
start up and testing ... I guess I'm just going to have to make a
decision
sooner than later on type of prop to buy.

Thanks,
Clay

I should have also mentioned/reminded that you wouldn't need to buy a
whole
new prop from Warp just buy the 3 blade hub for a couple of hundred
dollars,
and use the existing blades.

I noticed that I wrote break which should have been "brake" and the
surges
that I was referring to were airborne and really quite evident.

I had used the 4-blade on my Subaru( 160HP) Rebel and found that it was
really just to much prop. It would jump off land and accelerate like a
sports car but top end speed was slow and the prop really acted as a
break.
It was quite easy to feel both acceleration and deceleration surges just
by
playing with the throttle. I used the same Warp drive blades and just
changed the hub to a 3 blade hub, and am quite happy with the prop.

I have only flown a little bit on floats yet but don't really think I
will
even have to adjust the pitch to go from ski's/wheels to floats.

Warp Drive hub

Post by Walter Klatt » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:22 am

Hey, Bob, not sure if it will last for another month, but just
got back from the lake, where we had another 35 C day (95 F).
Never thought I would ever think it, but I am actually looking
forward to cooler weather. We have had a very warm summer so far
here on the coast. If you're coming out here, let me know and we
should meet up again. Just got another Rebel amphib (Julius) here
flying a couple days ago.

Hi Clay !

Sounds like you'll have to use a spacer with the
W-D prop - usually,
they are in the 1.5 - 2" thickness range. If you
find one like that, it
won't
hurt to use it - some folks believe the prop works
better if farther away
from the cowling....

Overall, though, the Prince sounds like a better bet.

We've hardly had summer here - spring was cold &
wet, with several
floods - and now fall is coming !! :-( REALLY
enjoyed a couple of
HOT days at Oshkosh, though - mid 80's with a
breeze - THAT felt GOOD !!!

Post by Jerry Purdom » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:22 am

Hi Clay

I have also been flying behind a 4 blade Warp prop on Edo 2000 floats for
over 400 hrs don't know anything about this braking effect either. It's
been good for me,quick of the water and cruise at 105 mph at 2400.

THANKS
