Empty weight for 1800 amphibs
Well, maybe I should weigh 25 or 30 lb. more but that still puts me in at
1220 lb.(1189 + 30). I plane on weighing it again with a different scale anyway.

Empty weight for 1800 amphibs
The scales I used look like bathroom scales but are supposed to be for
aircraft with multiplying arms. I calibrated them to my usual weight but my bath
scale and my mother in laws are 8 lb. different.
With a 4 times multiplying arm on the scale, if my weight is even 4 lb. off X
4 X four wheels, that's a 64 lb. error not even counting any error the scales
themselves may have.
I will weight it again as I'm sure now the 1265 lb. I weighed the first time
has to be wrong.

The factory ads say to expect a net increase of approx. 253 lb.
for the 1800 amphibs - but the max. gross does go up to 1,730 lb.
Still, a smaller useful load, but MUCH more than most aircraft
on floats (Old saying - "Nobody ever flies AT gross on floats !" ;-) )
You will have a ball, though !! :-)

When I went to amphibs with mine I weighed my two bungee gear,
wheels and all, along with the tail wheel and the whole works
came out to 50 pounds. I believe the spring gear is 25 pounds
heavier, and more if using a non-MAM tail wheel.
I recall seeing an earlier weight on the 1800's at 224 net
increase, but it didn't say what gear. In any case, I personally
wouldn't bet that Murphy really has a good handle on this either.
There does appear to be 2 different skin sizes for the 1800's, so
that would certainly account for different weights by builders.
There is also probably a lot of builder weighing errors and the
use of "accounting" scales.
As an aside, I recently helped a local Elite builder do his
weight and balance, and it came in at 1120, and that is with an
0360.

Rebel, so you're right - a smaller weight increase ! Although, the
spring gear Rebel would be likely about 20 lb. heavier to start with,
than a standard gear, because of all those doubler/trippler/octupler (!)

Empty weight for 1800 amphibs
I knew the Elites were heavier but 1120 LB. Wow! That's a lot of extra weight
for only 20 more HP to pull around. Was that a heavy Elite or is that typical?

Empty weight for 1800 amphibs
We are just ready to bring the front end loader into the hanger and push the
floats under the Rebel,just kidding but we are using the loader to lift the
plane.These are a set of MAM's earliest amphib kits and were built by Carm
Titus and used by him for about three years, they weigh 301#s.Yesterday I
completed the new 3.5"dia.x7"high cylindrical aluminum oil tank and it's
mounting pedestal which is affixed to the rear of the pump pedestal between
the seats,also determined to mount the selector switch and pressure gauge
under the dash on the extreme left side.Perhaps we will do pictures to post.
In case anyone is interested Clamar floats offer a Parker pump/selector
valve assy. which is quite small,maybe 3"square and 5high with a socket for
a detachable handle,it is really neat and would consolidate the two
functions, it is also a lot of money.
I have faired bungee gear,12-9044 loops with MAM wheels 8:50x6 McCreary's
and a Scott 3200,steel spring. When we weigh all of this stuff I will
report.
A local scale company is available with certified digital platform scales of
varying capacities which they deliver and operate and provide a federally
certified endorsed print out of the weight.
Another local aerial spray company has really cool and very expensive low
profile inter-connected digital platform scales to do their M-18 Dromaders
but they are more expensive to obtain the use of.

Rebel, so you're right - a smaller weight increase ! Although, the
spring gear Rebel would be likely about 20 lb. heavier to start with,
than a standard gear, because of all those doubler/trippler/octupler (!)

Just curious - how much do just the gear legs alone weigh ??
Axles, wheels, & tires would be the same on both gears, so the legs
would be the only difference. Anybody know what just the standard
gear legs weigh ?? I bet there's not a lot of difference, if you
count in the center tubes & the bungees (or die springs) ....
suspect most of the weight increase is in the fuse beef-ups.

Hi Walter
Was this Dennis's Elite we looked at back in August, and still on wheels ?.
Sounds like he's not too far off being finished now. All the photo's I took
of his and yours have proved a godsend as I work through mine.
I'm also interested where he ended up putting his battery for trim ?
I'm still working around the cabin roof fitting . Wings and outstanding bits
from MAM should be here in May sometime.

increase, but it didn't say what gear. In any case, I personally
wouldn't bet that Murphy really has a good handle on this either.
There does appear to be 2 different skin sizes for the 1800's, so
that would certainly account for different weights by builders.
There is also probably a lot of builder weighing errors and the
use of "accounting" scales.
As an aside, I recently helped a local Elite builder do his
weight and balance, and it came in at 1120, and that is with an
0360.
