[rebel-builders] Horner Wing tips - Factory extensions

Post by Curt Langholz » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:42 pm

I was at the factory in '04 and they showed me a set of droop tips that had just come out of the mold. If memory serves me semi-correctly I think they added about 12 sq ft of wing area total. I still have the price list for them at $932 but no details. They looked pretty nice with just a little droop on the tips, not like the bad head bangers. That is my 2 cents worth.

Yeah, local Elites here with them... But not sure what you mean by long,
long droop tips.

Where is Jeff?... Maybe he can explain this.

a Rebel (factory employees) with long long droop tips.

The only ones I am aware of are the current same ones as used on the
Elite.
Were there others??

If the theory of the hoerner tips work, they should provide the same
virtual
span as the extended ones, unless that little droop also gives you even
more
virtual span and maybe less induced drag, too, not sure, though, am
definitely no expert on that stuff.

Was talking the extended droop tips Murphy offered for a VERY limited time
for the Rebel. They looked to be extended considerably (in comparison to a
standard wing tip) and need a frame work attached to the wing end to mount
them.

[rebel-builders] Horner Wing tips - Factory extensions

Post by karl hipp » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:42 pm

when we were visiting Yellowknife in the NWT last June, I was surprised
to see a pair of Murphy Rebels. Neither looked like they had flown
recently. If I am remembering correctly, one appeared to be fairly
"stock" .The other had separated aileron/flaps and the drooping wingtips.
I thought they had waaay to much droop to them and looked awful. If even
there was an incredible performance bonus, I would not have them.

[rebel-builders] Horner Wing tips - Factory extensions

Post by rebflyer » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:42 pm

Walter,
Yea, it's been a long cold winter with no usual thaw. Lakes usually start to open by the end of March. It doesnt look that way this year! As for the tips, that would be the easiest change you could make! If you really took your time you could have the swap done in 2hrs! (not including paint<grin>). I gotta agree though when it comes to ops off the water there is nothing like POWER!

Hey, Curt, getting a little cabin fever, eh? Weather has been crappy here
oo. Yesterday, we were supposed to get the storm of the season, but it
idn't quite meet expectations,... happily. But on the bright side here,
on't have to cut my lawn yet. Last year, did it at the end of Feb, most
ears not necessary until end of March.
As for tips, I am no expert, just saying what I would do at this point in
ime. I just have the old regular rounded ones, and no intention to change
hem. If the Fife ones were available when I was building, probably would
ave gone with them.
Biggest bang for the buck is still the 360 (actually 375 would be my choice
oday), if you really want performance.
Now I better run, before the engine police get me...

I don't dislike them Curt.. I tried to play ball with Dave, to save him
hipping a single set at a time to Canada, and he didn't ever care to
espond or produce for me.
As for wing lengthening, I've had drawn for many years an extra couple of
ing bays insert for the wing end similar to a Cessna Art Wing extension,
ut never did it after Darryl told Fife his tips were too long and he was
oncerned about bending moments. Then as you say they made those old school
roop tips (that look like shat) and mounted them on what appears to be an
8" or so extension to the wing.

To all,
I was wondering if anyone has a copy of the structure that MAM recomends
for the wing extensions? One of the things that caused the delay on the
development of the Horner tips for the Elites and larger aircraft was
D.Murphy told Fife that his tips were to long.(I was sitting there with
them). The Elite tip has to be extended to allow for the
spade/counterbalance and still get the proper shape..Hmm maybe I could get
Dave to make a Elite length set for my Rebel! Walter, did you ever put
the Fife tips on your aircraft? I did the flight testing with the original
set. These are no B.S. numbers. We were just hoping that they didn't slow
things down and we already knew they looked better! On wheels the takeoff
roll went from 300 ft to 250ft. 30 gals fuel and 2 200lb occupants.
Cruise went up 2 to 3 kts. Stall was less but airspeed became
undependable, so no real numbers there. The turns in the pattern seemed
more solid.(that is just a feeling but Bob P. felt the same). I have!
nt seen the
MAM tips. Are they the

mud flap style? I mean droop tips? Great for knocking you're head on. I
know Wayne, you dislike the looks of the horner <grin>. But if you ever
want to try a set Dave and I will get them to you!
Soooo, after that ramble, does anyone have a copy of the factory
recomendations for the structure to support the tip extension?
I am offically sick of winter this year!

The wings on the SR series are virtually the same as the Rebel, Elite and
ukon models....... So the MAM extended tips will fit.

I have seen a few planes now with the new factory MAM wing tip
extensions,
and if I was doing mine again, that's what I would get. More span, wing
area, and better climb.

Anyone know where to get horner type wing tips for Rebel? My fiberglass
parts (cowling, wing tips, fairings) are really junky and need lots of
work
to bring them up to acceptable standards - or complete rebuild.

[rebel-builders] Horner Wing tips - Factory extensions

Post by Bob Palmer » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:42 pm

These are probably the same as the ones you mention. They require a
frame work, spar extensions etc. They don't have a lot of droop but add
a foot of wing.
The reason we have them is because we intend to put our aircraft on
floats. I can see where there could be potential for a structural
problem if a person ups the horsepower and extends the wings on a Rebel
on wheels. (or an Elite for that matter) Our POH will have warnings
about safe rough air airspeed.

Bob.
