[rebel-builders] Control column mount

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:03 pm

FWIW reversing the right bracket would interfere with how some of my
passengers position their feet with the seat fairly far back.

Hi all,
I've been watching with interest, and there are some good ideas
circulating. For what its worth, I've decided to fit the bearings reversed
and rivet the mounts. That gives me easy removal of the column, easy
replacement of the bearings and thrust washers, and saves the weight of 6
or 9 bolts, washers and nutplates.
By the way, has anyone ever substituted chrome moly steel tubing for
the FUS 5 as a beef up for the spring gear? This might give a stronger
thread to bolt the control column bearing bases as well. Maybe the tapped
aluminium threads are strong enough anyway?
I know none of this is any help if you have drilled the holes already,
and the weight of a steel FUS 5 makes the weight of a few little bolts
insignificant!
Cheers Mike

I have been following these emails with much interest. Due to concern over not having enough threads, I am considering mounting the right (passenger) side of the control column with 4 long AN3 bolts and locking nuts that go all the way through the FUS 5 square tubing. My square tubing was NOT cut in half length wise so I feel it is strong enough. Do any of the other builders have a strong opinion one way or another on this? Cris Tucker #719

Guys.. you are putting way too much thought into this. Consider that the
carrythru tube alone, Fus-5, is 0.125 inches thick. Tapped correctly and
cleanly you probably have one to 1.5 more threads than an AN364-3 shear nut
has. You are still riveting in the left bearing holder, or you can drill/tap
it as well for bolts if you so chose.

Consider this... the break strength rating of 1/8" cable is 2000 lbs... if
there ever was an instant that you'd test that it would be on up elevator
and it's attachment horn is a mere 7/8" above the bearing holder flanges..
taking almost all the rotational pull component out of the possiblity of
pulling these bolts out of the floor... it's 95% or more a shear issue. So
take 16 fastners... and divide that into 2000lbs and you get each fastner
being required to take 125 pounds of force before failure of the cable. You
could probably hammer the AN3 bolts into an untapped hole and cover any
rotational force trying to pop them out of the holes.. and shear is
definitely a non-issue.

Now don't make me go tap a hole in .125 aluminum and pull test a bolt to put
real numbers to it!! lol

Cheers,
Wayne

Way to go Wayne......... now you make it sound simpler than the first time
you explained it.

Cheers,
Jeff

PS: I'll check on those float pics when I get a "moment"..... lol.

[rebel-builders] control column mount

On this topic 2/6/10, wrt using AN3 bolts to tie the column bearing blocks
down, what's done in lieu of lock nuts? My Fus-5 cross pieces are cut in half
so I can use nylocks on the front AN3 bolts, but not sure how to "lock" the
bolts on the rear side. I could put in some nutplates, but really not looking
for more to do if I don't have to.

BTW, I bent up some great mount plates in my not so humble opinion, and
trimmed off the tabs of the stock bearing blocks. I'll post pics.

What did you use to bend the mounting brackets, Ben? Isn't that stuff
around 063?

[rebel-builders] control column mount

Hi Craig ...I was a bit surprised how easily and well this worked too, but I just
used a wood block and vice, this for .063 as you say. I sanded radiused
edges to the wood block to get bends similar to the original part. First part I
made was a throw away as my block was a snitch too wide. Luck was with
me for the next one and I decided to make the left side the same. I started
the bends with elbow grease but finished off by hitting through a short 2x4.
The edges of the wood form also need to be slightly acute angles ( ~10*
past 90) to get final of 90*.

Last night I drilled holes for placement of the fore/aft rotation limits of the
control column. I am surprised how beefy this thing is, part of which is the
3/16" rivets to hold it down. I guess I'll stick with MAM and use 3/16" rivets,
but intuition has me not liking to put holes near the middle of Fus-5, and it's
hard to picture that (4) 1/8" rivets would be inadequate for the limit block.
