Hi all,
I was pricing an airspeed indicator online for my
Super Rebel and noticed a huge price difference
between the TSO'd/PMA'd and Non-TSO'd, Non-PMA'd
instrument. I know what TSO and PMA means. But, what
does it mean as far as build quality, durability, etc?
I once bought a cheaper VSI for my Cessna years back
that was listed as an 'import' and it quit working
after 9 months!

Howdy Jason.
Please be aware that non-TSO'd instrumentation is
usually not repairable by instrument shops. They
consider them as 'disposable'.
As well, any Canadian registered aircraft that have a
transponder installed require 2 year recertification
(see CAR 625 appendix C item 13) 'including any
altitude sensing reporting mechanisms' (this will
include an altitude encoder if your transponder is
mode 'c' capable, as well as your altimeter).
Non-TSO'd altimeters are usually considered
uncertifiable by instrument shops.
Before purchasing you non-TSO'd equipment, you should
consider all this.
