Turning a Wing

Post by rognal » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:08 pm

There has been some discussion in another thread about turning the wing on the
worktable so I thought I would throw in my 2 cents. Since my work area
is height, width, and length challenged, I had no room for ropes and pulleys.
And I didn't trust my wife with lifting heavy, expensive items so I needed a
way to turn it on my own.

I have uploaded to the R Wing file area a jpeg drawing of the wing cradle I
made to turn the wing as a one man operation. It worked well for me. It only
requires a few pieces of scrap wood that I glued and screwed together.
When not in use it stands on end in a corner of the shop. The cutouts in the
plywood should meet the top of the wood spar so that the spar helps support the
leading edge. I padded the spar with felt but left the edges of the plywood
bare. I was also able to turn the wing frame (no skins) by clamping some wood
bars across the plywood horns to support the main spar as the wing rotated.

Hope this helps someone.
