Elite Structural Mods

Post by steenson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:08 pm

Dear Everyone,

I'm finishing up my wings and am about to launch in on the fuselage kit. I
have a couple questions:

1. Nosewheel option -- Although I don't plan to fly with a nosewheel, if
there any purpose for beefing up this forward area for the installation of
amphib floats? I saw a nice Rebel on amphibs at Sun & Fun with evidence of
some buckling and deformation in the forward attach area.

2. Have other Elite builders done anything (similar to mods proposed by Rebel
Doctor O'Shea) to address other areas of the fuselage? Or have the designers
gotten it about right?

So far it has been a fun experience building, with no squawks apart from a
misformed right wingtip that MAM attributes to the manufacturing mold. I have
been pleased with the factory support.

Wayne G. O'Shea

Elite Structural Mods

Keith, If you are talking about the "float fix" bulletin top of the door
post doublers and firewall channel that's good, because they are a
<DEFINITE> necessity on WHEELS as well!!! OR.... my firewall plates and a
staggered double row of rivets up the door post, with the upper 5 upsized to
3/16 if a retro fit instead of the Band-Aid method. Rebel and Elite are both
the same in constuction in these areas.

Cheers,

Bob Patterson

Elite Structural Mods

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:08 pm

Hi Jeff !

1. You should definitely do the "Float Fix" mods on the factory
web site, and adding Wayne's firewall plates would be a "Good Idea"(tm),
too. I'm assuming you are going straight onto amphibs ... ??

Several people told me about "the horrible crease right across
the belly of that Rebel on amphibs" - I went to have a look, and had
to look twice to even find it !!! People sure exaggerate !!! The dark
paint colour didn't help, but there was only a small wave on the left
side panel under the door. (an area we always replace with .032, as
part of the 'Ontario' mods ...). The wrinkle appeared to have been
caused by running into something with the spring gear, when it was on
wheels, forcing it back - it didn't appear to have anything to do with
the floats, as it was only on one side, and only at the front. (Just
MHO ...)

If you're going to do a lot of heavy float flying, you might
want to look at installing steel brace tubes in a "V" shape, from the
wing roots to the firewall, like on the Moose. A few Rebel builders
who fly in rough water have added these, after several years of
pounding the waves ....

2. Haven't heard of any other mods. - there are only 3 Elites
flying, as far as I know, so there's not enough history yet to suggest
anything else. There aren't any Elites in Ontario, so the group here
isn't likely to have much help for a while....

Dear Bob (and Keith),

Thanks for the suggestions. I had blown by the float fix section on the
Technical Support website, thinking that this would have been corrected in the
later kit that I have.

Jeffrey
