I have been looking at the instructions for installing the fuel tank outlet
fittings (W-159 & 160) and I have come to the conclusion that they should be
installed in the root rib from inside the tank rather than outside as the
manual seems to indicate.
I say it should go inside rather than outside because you can run a nice filet
of sealant around the neck of the fitting on the outside to complement the
sealant sandwiched between the fitting and the rib on the inside. If you put
the fitting on the outside of the rib then all you have is the sealant between
the fitting and the rib and since we are cutting a flat on the flange (of the
W-159 or 160) on one side to clear the wing rib, the flange of the W-159 & 160
is going to be reduced in width.
Is this making sense? What have you guys done on this?
The W-159 mounted to the lower tank skin should of course be installed from the
outside to not impede flow of water from the tank.
Thanks
Dave R.

Dave : I put the fuel tank outlets in per the manual and have not had a
problem. I do not know of anyone else having a problem in this area

Fuel Tank Outlet Question
I thought about this as well and elected to put the flanges on the outside
for easier replacement if ever required due to stripped threads. If the
flange trimming and riveting pattern is followed I am sure you will have no
leakage. We always consider any assembly with respect to possible future
maintenace. You are more likely to have a seam leak, such as at bulkheads
or stringers, than at a fitting. Be as generous with the proseal
internally as the government is with your money!
