Home Made Cleco Gun was: Re: Cleco price alert

Post by David Ricker » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:47 pm

Guys I can't imagine completing this project without an air powerd cleco gun.

After working at our first parts for a while my co-builder declared that if we
didn't find a solution she would have Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) or arms
like Popeye, the prospect of either wasn't pleasant! Destroying one of ATS'
crappy hand tools (no heat treat) helped make the decision easier.

After looking at the price to import something off the shelf, we put together a
couple of units using Bimba air cylinders and a small Clippard spool valve and
mounted them in a simple pistol grip handle made from plastic pipe. The
squeezing clamp was made from a few bits of steel I had kicking around the
shop, not so pretty but they do the trick. All told the cash outlay was quite
modest, most of that for the valves.

If anyone would like to know more let me know or I could see about putting a
picture in the archives.

Back to wing #1......

Missed the air tool question! Have never used one, so don't know. When you
start out with the hand pliers make sure you switch hands every 10 clecos or
so, so your muscles grow/ache evenly on each arm!!!!

Subject: Cleco price alert
Avery Tools is running a special on Clecos 4 std sizes for
$.32 USD each down from $.38 USD each.

Is this a fair/good/excellent price? Is their quality OK?
Is there a better quality/price source for Clecos?
What air Cleco installation tool do people prefer?
